See You - Depeche Mode Cover

I don't know about you, there was always something I didn't quite get about Depeche Mode.  Something didn't quite gel, if you know what I mean.

All indications were that I would be right in their target audience.  In fact when I was in school I was briefly in a band that did DM covers.  This is 1982 we're talking about.  I have thier greatest hits CD and am fond of many of the tracks, but I wouldn't say I was ever a fan as such.

This song, from their A Broken Frame LP, is probably my favorite of theirs.  But even this one I don't quite get - is it a simple innocent sweet song about adolescent unrequited love, or a darker song about unhealthy obsession?  Hmmm...

Anyway, no matter.  I got playing the chords a while back.  What I discovered was that this electro-pop, pioneering synth song was obviously written on a guitar.  The way the chords fall is classic. especially the section in the middle (F-G-Em-Am, all with the B and top E strings open and sounded).  It's one of the few songs I can play on guitar and sing at the same time.  If someone asked me to do a song, it'd probably be this one.  So this here version is going on for being an unplugged style version, if you like.

I prefered Soft Cell at the time, I must admit, and probably still do to this day, If I'm honest.

Nice one Nick.  remember the original well but it certainly works with guitar.  Some of their early stuff was a bit poppy looking back but still enjoy hearing them.  How about doing Enjoy the Silence - thats my all time fave of theirs!

Funny. I don't know the original, but I agree that this acoustic version seems very light - very "adolescent unrequited love". But on the other hand, those drums, xylophone (?) and the guitar solo are splendid. And I like that ending very much.

Quoting a darker 80' blade runner: "you did a man's job".

Don't know the original either but great job, weirdly sounds like a lost Roy Orbison song in places....

I'm not sure if I've heard this before or not. I've only heard a few Depeche Mode songs and the title of this one didn't ring any bells. When I started listening, it didn't sound familiar at first, but that fab chorus does sound familiar. I checked out the original video on YouTube, but I still can't decide whether I've heard this before or I'm just confusing it with some other song that has a similar chorus.

Anyway, your cover sounds great. I especially love the harmony vocals in the chorus. Very cool arrangement too.

This sounds great!

Depeche Mode is easily one of my top bands.  Looking forward to their new album in a week and 1/2.

Although I got on board late (circa 1991, i.e. "Violator")... and don't know everything from their first wave.  Anyway you make me want to go listen to the original.

Great soloing!

Thanks everyone. Funny to think that Depeche Mode are still this big international band, nobody ever mentions them her in the UK.

I had an hour this afternoon and did a much better mix. I thinned out the vocal and guitar parts and used a different reverb setting. I like it a lot more. But it's stuck inside the Zoom for now. I'll let you know when I update it.

i think this was the first song martin gore ever wrote, so when vince clarke left they had another songwriter. it is a strange one tho. as an aside John Frusciante the guitarist from the red hot chilli peppers studied depeche mode to write his own hits.

i digress, my tinternet dead slow finally got to hear, loving second version.

I don't know the original either, but I enjoyed your cover very much. Great job on the vox, guitars, and glockenspiel (sounds well-tamed).

I remember getting a Depeche Mode album back in the day when we called them albums - it was somewhat dark electronic-based dance music - which wasn't my cuppa tea then - but your cover brought Neil Young to mind in places.

Nicely done!
