My daughter just got back from 3 years in australia and wants me to go with her to some "slam poetry" events locally. i've written one for it, but she says i need to do ten minutes worth of stuff, so if i do go i might try sneak by with some song lyrics.

Here's what i wrote for it.
Perhaps i should record it as spoken verse.
But for now try imagine it as a performance spoken out lout et al. LOL.
It is what it is.
I'm new to this malarkey
And don't know all the rules
Is it stream of thought
Created on the spot
Or written down first
Every word checked, crossed
Tweaked until the meaning's lost
Should it rhyme
Or be more sublime
Pretentious moi
Up my arse
Or better than that
See I'm new to this malarkey
I usually write songs
With a chorus a verse
And a tune you can hum
Poetry's poor cousin?
Who knows
I don't know the audience
They don't know me
Should it be political
Or from the soul
Personal
How much of myself
Is it safe to share
Will anyone care
I don't know
I'm new to this malarkey
Maybe I'll do it again
Sometime

Given that S&G were early influences, this is sheer poetry to me.  8)
