Glockenspiel

So for Xmas I was bought a glockenshpiel.

Not a complete surprise, I was hinting.  Great fun to play, I've no clue how to go about recording it!  With a microphone, obviously, but beyond that.

Any thoughts or advice?

Interesting thread, I thought it would involve distance.  Which probably means my mic isn't up to it (I have to turn the gain right up to get anywhere).  I've had the same trouble with percussion instruments.

i have one of these clip on pick ups. i have clipped it onto numerous things, household radiators for example to do a rhythm track.

To record my glock, I place my MBR behind the glock, about 6 inches away in a central position, angled at 45 degrees.

     Oh yea. Don't hit it too hard. Just a nice precise gentle 'fall' of the beater.

I used my mxl 991 straight condenser mic and I think I settled on the mic from underneath about 6 inches away. Can't remember the settings and I'm sure I added reverb. Play around with it and you'll find that sweet spot. It does take a bit of practice to get all the bars to ring. You can definitely hear the ones I didn't hit right. Have fun brother!

Before I got that, I used a normal condenser mic.

Beware, you'll have to cut some bass and of course keep an eye on some high frequencies. And be gentle when compressing, too much compression will completely ruin the sound.
