They seem to be getting away from that with most of their newer synths. I guess they're trying to keep the cost down. Although, they sell an optional wood kit for the Slim Phatty. Maybe they'll offer one for the Sub Phatty too.

The Korg MS-20 Mini is impressive too. The idea of playing around with patch cords appeals to my inner nerd. :)

$599 US street price (£499). Available April 2013.

Here's another interesting new iPad product from Behringer. The iX16 digital mixer.

  • 16 inputs
  • 16 MIDAS mic preamps
  • bi-directional 18-channel USB 2.0 audio interface
  • USB type-A connector for storage to USB flash drive or hard drive

The 18-channel USB audio interface lets you record the 16 inputs simultaneously to individual tracks in your DAW so you'll have full control over your mix. Great for bands.

I don't see any Hi-Z or Line inputs, so I guess you can't connect a guitar, bass, or keyboard directly. That's unfortunate.

I haven't seen anything on price or availability yet.

The only multitrack recorder announcements at NAMM:

TASCAM DP-006 - http://tascam.com/product/dp-006/

TASCAM DP-008EX - http://tascam.com/product/dp-008ex/

Still no virtual tracks, as far as I can tell. But what they do have is lots of convenient controls. The DP-008EX has individual rotary controls for Level, Pan, and Reverb on each track, plus dual input trims and master level. There's also a separate Phones Level on the back.

As multitrack recorders, these aren't as full-featured as the BR-80, so they're not for everyone. But I think they'd be great for singer-songwriters who are only interested in recording a few tracks and would never use virtual tracks anyway. Because of all the controls, beginners would probably find them easier to use than a BR with all its menus. They might also be good for someone who already has a larger multitrack and is just looking for an easy-to-use small recorder to record a few tracks with. And they might be great for DAW users who are recording their keyboards and drums on the computer but want a portable recorder for guitars and/or vocals. They could then easily bring those tracks into the DAW for final mixing.

I didn't see anything about pricing and availability.

Still no where near the capability of the BRs. (IMHO) It is good to see, though, that at least SOMEONE is doing a little development with regard to stand-alone recorders. This year has left me feeling a little like a disappointed kid at Christmas time.

This sounds like something I need, as I don't play often enough lately to build up good calluses.
