BR-800 question

I had read (possibly on this site) that the BR-800 uses USB 1.0. I find this hard to believe, yet they still use the MT data thing so I guess anything is possible. Is this true? Thanks.

Yes. To date, the only BR that uses USB 2.0 is the BR-80. All previous models, including the BR-800, use the slower USB 1.1. However, you can remove the memory card from any BR and insert it into a USB card reader attached to your computer. It will then appear to your computer exactly like a BR connected via USB. All BR software (BR Wave Converter, BR Rhythm Editor, BR Explorer, BR Song Librarian) will work with the USB card reader just the same as it would with the BR connected to the computer. So, if you have a newer computer with USB 3.0 ports, you can get a USB 3.0 card reader for faster file transfers than even the BR-80.

Thanks. My bigger concern would be using it as an interface. Is it a stereo interface or can it work as a 4 track interface as well? If it's the latter, 4 channels of audio seems like a lot to process with USB 1.1, am I mistaken?

What a  baffling product.  So cool, yet it uses technology that is 12-15 years old.

I've lent my BR800 to my brither so I can't test it now, but from the manual it seems that only 2 tracks can be sendt to the comuter. A shame really, cause according to wikipedia the bandwith on USB 1.1 is 12MBits/s, which should suffice to transfer 4 16bits 44.1kHz tracks.

Thanks.  Another thing I'm confused about: is this unit a 16 bit or 24 bit machine? I understand that in standalone mode it uses the MT2 compression or 16 bit for song sketch, but I assumed in interface mode that it would be 24 bit. Am I wrong?

I think you're right. The AD and DA converters are 24-bits and I think I've read somewhere that it operetat with 24 bits internally (FX, mixing etc) but the export format is 16-bits WAV and I think your right that the MT2 mode is 16-bits. Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong ;D

I'm not sure what it sends out via USB. As Geir said, the AD and DA converters are 24-bit and it uses 24-bit internally. For files (MT2 and WAV) it uses 16-bit. The Windows drivers support ASIO which supports 24-bit samples, so I would guess that the BR-800 is sending 24-bit samples over USB but I don't know that for certain.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I'm going to make an educated guess that it has to be 24 bit for the interface.

Dang! I was thinking about getting one for and Interface/Control surface. But if this is the case it won't work for what I need. USB 1.1??? Wow I'm glad I read this...Thanks!

Didn't know that. In other words, in interface mode it's a 2in, 2out machine? Hmmm. I have 2 keyboards I was planning to hook up to 1-4. I guess I will only be able to hear one of them. :'( ( I mainly use plugins so it's not a  huge issue).

I haven't tried USB yet- I ordered a refurbed model and they didn't ship the usb cable or software, it's on it's way.
