. . . well sort of  ???  ???

Heard this and really liked the idea of sitting on the tailgate in the moonlight and just grabbing a fleeting moment (!) so I've cherry picked bits of the song and done my own thing. Hope it's not too hideous. Oh and it's nothing personal  ;D

Here's the link to Mark's song https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=7534

I don't know Haylie, let me preface by saying you sound good, your strumming is definitely getting more confident. Also, if you approached Launched before and got his blessing then all I say next is void.

I don't like the approach you've taken with this and your last post, which I liked as a song. You seem to think just taking some of someone's lyrics and writing your own tune is a cover and it's not. A cover is using the existing tune as a skeleton and recreating it or making it your own. Making it your own, in my opinion, would be changing style or instrumentation, etc. What you've really done is just taken someone's lyrics/writing and used it as your own, twice. The best part of your hybrid/country/cover tune was your chorus, you should have written your own verses. It's cool to be inspired by someone's writing and even quoting someone or writing a response too a song; but this seems pretty close to plagiarism. Your honest about it but I'm not sure that makes it alright.
I guess it also surprises me after your strong opinion in the copyright discussion.

I don't want to come off as attacking you, I hold no copyright on most of my posts and anyone can cover or steal anything they wish :'( and I accept that risk, but I certainly hope if someone was going to use large chunks of my writing in there own songs, they might ask first. If you did , please accept my apologies.
As always,

Oh Hook - I checked to see Mark had the OK to cover icon and he does and certainly had no intention of offending anyone. I would never pass anyone else's song off as my own and did this purely for fun no other reason. If it's going to upset anyone I'll gladly take it off!

I really don't want to get into another SC debate - so I'll just delete it!

You know Haylie, discussion is when this site is at it's best, perhaps not if your in the center. I don't for a second think that Mark would be offended, but I don't know for sure. I also don't think you intended anything other than what you stated. But as a song writer, you should write your tunes and as a musician cover them. If your going to alter the intention or perhaps the meaning of someone's writing, talk with them first. This is just my opinion and perhaps I'm way off. I certainly know that your intention was not negative, let your tune play, it's not bad. But be careful if your going to borrow some indie artist lyrics, they might have a copyright.

Hook makes some good points. I think when someone puts "Okay to Cover" in their signature, they're making the reasonable assumption that the song will be covered pretty much in its entirety. I can easily imagine how some songwriters might not like to have their songs taken apart for someone to use bits of them to make a new song. Especially for the lyrics since they often tell a story or make a point, and to use only parts of the lyrics and add other lyrics to them can change the story or point that the original songwriter intended. So, even if someone has "Okay to Cover" in their signature, I think it would be a good idea to ask them before taking portions of their songs. If they agree to it, then that's fine. But don't be too surprised if some songwriters say no.

Of course, if someone has "Okay to Cover" and you want to cover their complete song, then you don't need to ask first because that's what the "Okay to Cover" is for. But if you only want to use portions of the song, then it would be best to ask first.

Okay didn`t read it all sorry. I`ll have to be neutral on this since i haven`t heard it.

Knowing Launched i would say he wouldn`t mind but Hook has a point too. I say get Mark to hear and then when he
approves. Re-post!  :)

weird al always changes words on the songs he covers but he doesn;t change the music. to an extent she is doing similiar in that is is a parody song. weird all doesn't always change every single word either, so some of it is intact.

perhaps even if someone says - ok to cover, it might still be a good idea, to speak with them before releasing a song, just to be safe. i only say this cause i would prefer to be asked, so i can ask what they're intending to do with and to the song.

also, i have not seen on bad SC "discussion" yet. everyones been civil, to the point and respectful, even in such situation of any kind of negative critique. can't ask for more than that. personally, i think this is between launched and hilary.
