Using a capo often helps change the key to fit your vocal range. I never go anywhere without my Shubb capo  ;)

I second Blueberry's song writing method. Works for me too.
With no one around, I try to get into a sort of trance with the rhythm and chords and just sing (Howl more like) pretty much ANYthing- "stream of consciousness" I think its called but it's more like semi-consciousness- and some useful phrase always come out that starts things going. You'll get that "Holy crap that's perfect!" moment and you are on your way.
