i am aware who the song is about but i couldn't tell you much about the album, i assume it is about mr barrett. i love the line "come on you target of faraway laughter" i work with adults with learning difficulties and mental health problems who are often the target of "faraway laughter"  so i find that line especially poignant.

I thought you probably did know. And if you didn't, I felt you must have figured it out while singing it...

I don't actually know much about Syd Barrett myself, apart from this.

I've always loved the sound of this thing since I first heard it (79 or so, so a bit late in the general scheme of things). But I only really got into it when I bought the CD in the 90s and paid attention to the lyrics. They are so full of stuff, you can put in and take out what you want/need, when you want/need it. Ever since then, I've been convinced it's a very fine and powerful song, quite aside from being the main top and tail of Wish You Were Here.

In fact, I think the power of the song is overshadowed by what a good job they did on creating the tracks :D

i think that is what is so enchanting about christy moore's paired back version and is what turned me and alfredo onto the song.

Yes, this is my case.
I mean, the original by Pink Floyd is a great piece of music anyway, wonderfully arranged and played, and the famous beginning 4 notes on the guitar made it one of the most known songs of the last decades, but I concentrated seriously for the first time on the lyrics after listening to the Christy Moore version, so simple and intimate. In other words I found a true gem (the lyrics) hidden inside a great song. From here my arrangement of the song as a slow ballad...

Oh yeah, that's a fab version - it's kind of what I had in mind myself, that's roughly how it gets played on the sofa here... not quite as good guitar playing though! :D

Yep, under the gorgeous Pink Floyd sounds, there is a gorgeous and powerful song.
