Firstly thanks to 64Gs for explaining what FMGWABP was - I would have got it on my own but thought barge pole was one word  ;D

I digress, this is beautiful guys - backer and vox, well done. I'd like to know what the changes were you made to the second mix.

And I always thought it was "my granny" not "me gently"... oh well, we learn something everyday.

I commented over on alonetone yesterday when it appeared - but I shall now have a listen to these two mixes. The one I heard yesterday was fab.

Well I likes Mix 1 - off towards Mix 2

Meanwhile I shall quote myself from alonetone:

Yah buggers!!

(Quietly takes a sheet of paper out of the pile of "possible covers to attempt")

Brilliant, guys. Mighty fine version

Listening to Mix 2 now. I'm with Haylie, I'd like to know what the changes are - I think I prefer Mix 2, but I can't tell why. It seems less busy maybe... but I can't put a finger on it.

And according to orh's "About" on alonetone, that one appears to be Mix 3 ? - I'll have to go and listen to that again now :)

Of the three, my favourite is Mix 2. The stereo echoes on Jim's voice seem more languid and relaxed than the ones I think I can hear on Mix 3 over the road - the whole thing is smoother and the lead vocal sits in the mix and shines more :)

That's my two penn'th... now you're going to tell me they're all the same mix apart from the length of the last note :D

Well....long reply... :)

First of all, a BIG thank you to all of you for all your kind words!

To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of this song (and the same, I discovered later, it was for James too...), until I discovered, few months ago on YouTube, a version of "Shine On You..." by Christy Moore....so different and wonderful. That was the starting point, although, as often happens, inspiration leads to quite different results: so, while I was thinking how to rearrange the song, I began to consider it someway a slow, sad ballad.

I have to add that it wasn't easy to play the backing tracks for...weather reasons: here in south of Italy this has been the hottest summer I can remember  :(, and even *thinking* to play some guitar, brought a BIG amount of SWEAT...

Anyway: this time it has been a new approach for recording for me. I recorded my Seagull acoustic guitar and a simulation of an acoustic 12-string (courtesy of Roland VG-99) on my iMac, using Adobe Audition.

Since I like to experiment, for the electric guitars I've used this wonderful app for iPad called AURIA:

http://auriaapp.com/Products/auria

...my friends, this is just a killer app! Something really professional at last, that transforms the iPad in a REAL recording studio. For guitarists is available, as app-in purchase, the Overloud THM plugin, to have really great guitar sounds. To connect the guitar (Godin Freeway) I've used the Apogee Jam.

After recording the electric guitar parts, connecting the iPad to the Mac, I've transfered them to work over them on Audition (file transfer, as wav files, can be done easily via Dropbox too).

To finish, the mystery of the 3 mixes... ;D

when James sent me the vox parts, I thought to process them with Izotope Nectar, and the result is the first mx. Not bad, but James told me that the backing tracks were too loud respect to the original, and on the whole vocals seemed someway over-processed. Right.

So, in the second mix, I left the vocals absolutely dry, without any added effect. Only the global mix was processed, as usual for all my recordings, with an old version of T-Racks 24.

James's version instead consists of the same vocal parts but with some reverb added on the backing tracks, but MINUS my final processing with T-Racks.

 :D

Ciao, grazie and please excuse my English!

Alfredo

the man is a genuis. many thanks for making me love this song. the mix over at alonetone is actually the first rough mix i sent to alfredo. i was out of reach of he internet for most of the weekend and had that mix playing ad nauseum on my piepod. so i had that thing of loving the first version you hear (if that makes sense) anyway i now am of the opinion that mix 2 on ere is the one (actually it's mix 3 but alfredo's second mix).

anyway was at a great wee night inthe ettric for the folk club gathering and let some  of the guys hear it, they thought it as fab, they have reserved a chair for you alfredo.

:) I'm so glad that "Mix 3", or Mix 2 on here is the one you are both happiest with, seeing as it seems to be the one we're all going for!

Interesting how you both didn't really go for it originally. And even more how Alfredo says how he started to see it as a slow sad ballad.

The version I have up my sleeve, if I ever do it, is a blues song with interesting chords. It's not exactly my idea, I saw a local band do it some years ago and listening to them I realised it's just a blues really. I usually play it stripped down to me and a single acoustic, a bit like I did Whiter Shade of Pale. I didn't used to be able to reach the chorus properly, but it's possible I could now.

And orh - from a comment you made earlier - are you aware what/who this, and the whole album, is reputedly about?
