I must say that cheered me up. And scared me at the same time. Should I drink some of that stuff when I am in Norway next week.........?

I am very sorry to read about your ears.  I hope you can sort out your hearing with the aids. My step-father has had to try a few different types before he found a set that works for him.  It took him a few years but he now seems fairly happy.  I wish you luck.

Thanks Ian, my father in law has just had hearing aids fitted and went through the same issues. The UK national health ones are quite good these days but my FiL had problems with those so I am going straight for the top of the range stuff based on his experience. But that could cost up to £3 to £4 grand a pair and they only last 5 years!!!!

Nigel,
I don't know if you recall or not, but I've got horrendous hearing, 60% loss in my left ear. I tested out hearing aids on several occasions, and came to the conclusion that I have no use for them. Everything I hear is muffled, and they amplified that muffled noise. I didn't realize how dependent I'd become on reading lips until my last visit to the Otolaryngologist. While balancing the hearing aids for a simulated stereo effect, I was pretty happy until I closed my eyes and could no longer make out what the audiologist was saying. I tested that for a week, and came up with the same results. Sure I could hear louder, but not better.

I recall that now Tony. I definitely need hearing aids for work (I do a lot of telephone conference calls and I have real difficulty hearing some clients, even with the headset volume on max) and also at home, my family is fed up with me having the TV so loud (and also not hearing what they say). But I'm not sure if I will want to use them for music work because they may make that harder -  it may be difficult to use headphones and they they may change my perception of sound. I think my mixes seem to turn out OK even with my "muddy" ears because I always use reference material and try to match the mix to a specific sound. I'm worried if I have hearing aids they will make me turn out mixes that sound ok for people with hearing aids but not normal folks. But I don't really want to use headphones anymore without aids because I know I have to have them too loud (which means more damage to the hearing).

You can see why I'm a bit in limbo right now. But hopefully it will get sorted out.

Cheers,

Nigel

You have to apply "Can Logic"

First mix with a good set of hearing aids.
Then listen with a cheap set
Make necessary adjustments and repeat until the mix is good.
Then switch to the good cans and mix...

Your mixes have always been stellar. Your hearing didn't go over night, so IMHO the bad news is that your hearing has diminished, the good news, you've already been dealing with it for years. There's no reason to question your own ability to mix, get on that horse and ride.

Brilliant! But now I have to have multiple hearing aids, just like I do headphones and monitors! Is there no end to the GAS? :)
