Hiya all, many thanks for this, made my day to see this here! I don't usually put my dob into site profiles so I didn't check to see if I had some nice b'day messages. But I must have done so here and I just happened to pop by today and saw this.

A nice belated birthday present, many thanks to all who posted here, I really appreciate it. I still pop in from time to time but right now for a whole bunch of reasons I have no time for music. Work is taking too much time and a few other family activities have taken precedence as well (all good things, just taking up too much spare time). But I have also been a bit put off music for a little while as I finally went to see a doctor about my hearing, which has been getting steadily worse. I thought it was all related to sinus and inner ear problems, but it turns out I have hearing loss related to nerve damage and of course playing in a band and listening to lots of loud music were identified as primary contributors. Old age doesn't help wither, although my hearing as about 25% worse than the average 55 year old.

So the net is I have to have hearing aids  :( I'm finding that somewhat depressing but I will just have to live with it. What I'm waiting to see is how that affects my musical activities. With the aids in, it could significantly change my perception of sound, and of course it will affect working with headphones. How, I won't know until they are fitted, so I am also waiting for all of that to happen. They are damn expensive as well, could buy a Rickenbacker bass and a half for what they may cost!

So I hope to be back making music later in the year but we'll have to see how things go. In the meantime I will pop in from time to time and say hi. Final pint - look after your ears. I always took a Lemmy approach (turn it up) and saw those in ear protector things as for girls, how wrong I was......

Cheers,

Nigel

Hi Nigel! Good to see you around, but very sorry to learn about the hearing problems. Must be a worry, but I'm sure it won't interfere with your amazing musical talent in the long run. You'll probably just need time to adapt in certain ways.

I've also started to notice something 'not quite right' with my hearing. Things are slightly off-balance when I listen on headphones... everything seems a bit panned to the right, as if my left ear isn't working at full capacity. It's making mixing quite hard, so I may have to look at speakers rather than headphones sometime soon.

Anyway, good to see you and come back soon!

Nigel,

I am very sorry to read about your ears.  I hope you can sort out your hearing with the aids. My step-father has had to try a few different types before he found a set that works for him.  It took him a few years but he now seems fairly happy.  I wish you luck.

Greeny,

I had very much the same symptoms last year and started to get very worried.  It turned out that my right ear had become blocked with ear wax. I actually could not hear anything.  The doc fixed me up with a sluice out with a syringe full of hot water.

Thanks Tim, I did get a bit worried about the hearing because I had assumed it was not permanent loss and could be fixed by sinus clear out or something like that, so it was a reality shock to see how bad the audiology graphs looked. Apart from playing in a band for all those years, I also listen to music on headphones a lot (and I mean a lot) and that doesn't help because I have it quite loud. So I'm trying to cut down on using headphones, which will also make music recording and mixing hard (because I mainly do it when the rest of the family are in bed).

So I can only say take care of your ears, get some really good monitors and try to use those more.

I'll try to stop by to say hi more and hopefully be back with more music later in the year.

Cheers,

Nigel
