Missed this the first time around. Glad it was bumped!

Very beautiful Haylie !! Stunning performance.

Quote from: Hilary on June 28, 2012, 03:42:13 PMGeir gets some outstanding recordings with his internal mics on the BR - Both Sides Now springs to mind. He's obviously got a different timbre to his vox and probably has a bigger car!
Yes I've done quite a few vocal recordings in my car (and other cars ::) ), but never guitar and vocals at the same time I think (tho I have recorded both guitar and vocals in -20°C :D ).

Recording guitar and vocals with on mic (or a stereo pair) is a challenge, and tho people seem to like my take on "Both sides now", I'm not relly very pleased with the recording. I did the mistake of using one of the preset patches that has far too much compression for my taste. My advice is to use as little compression as possible and to favourise the vocals. If the guitar get too low, well too bad, but with a performance of a song, the vocals must get priority. Get the mic as close as necessary to get a good vocal sound and accept the guitarsound you get! Lift you guitar higher if needed, but don't compromise on the vocal sound.

Oh well ........

I know the version by Claire Teal really (Ferry Across the Mersey springs to mind with Gerry and the Pacemakers). I've never heard anyone else do it. It was early days with the BR when I did this - I'd like to think I could do a better job with it now!

Just checked out the Ray Charles one, it's very lovely but a different song - I've got bluesy tones to my voice, but there's no way I could pull that one off on the geetar.

I think this performance is at the top of your submissions Haylie. A great cover of a great song. I prefer the dryer (less room reverb reflections) vocal sound that you've captured from the car vocal booth. The guitar does have a little more reverb in it though...must have bounced off the dash board. Can you add post MBR internal effects to this? It sounds good to me but a slight touch of post reverb might work well to enhance an already good overall sound.

I've not tried recording in a car space before (no plans to) but I've fought the room reflections thing many times in my space and it's more evident the farther I sing from the mic. To help this, I taken a corner of my room and draped heavy blankets on each wall but not touching the walls. I face into the corner and sing into the mic on a stand. I can now sing any where from 2" out to 18" out without worrying about picking too many unwanted room reflections. Just some thoughts but I enjoyed your cover and performance!

Test, test, one, two, three.....is this mic on?

Thanks Farrell - I think the song suits me and sits nicely in my 'golden spot' in my range but agree with Andy that the car added some ping to the guitar and missed a lot of the vox probably due to the very low positioning of the BR (IMO - it sounds very dull to me). It's all academic now anyways as I'm not planning to record in the car again. The track was recorded simultaneously on 1 track so no real chance of editing it - I've sang a lot today and am really tired but if I get the chance later I'll do a quick and dirty version of it again so you can see how I'd record it now. It'll be real interesting to see which one everyone prefers.

I've also done a version of this with Gene - here's the link

Thanks for taking an interest, it's much appreciated.
