Oh thanks Andy that's really interesting and I've made notes - crikey, I've sure got a lot to learn!

Amazing take on a tune I always loved and have never tried to do. In fact this is without a doubt my new favorite version of this tune also!! I will have to read your novella another time but I do look forward to it.

Thanks for the info Andy, it's good to understand how others do things and this is well described and very clear.

It's still brilliant.

Oh well ........

Do you know something folks? I read through that essay this morning and realised something...

The tripling of the vocal track was worked out after listening to this take, cool, no worries.

But the doubling of one of the guitar mics evolved to make one of the previous takes work... With this one, because I had all the channels set up, I don't think I bothered listening to the two guitar tracks just panned left and right to see if it would work like that!!  ::) :D

I suspect I would still have done it this way though - what I was aiming at was "how do I get some wideness across the stereo without making it sound like the guitarist is on one side and the singer on the other?"

I strongly suspect there's lots of you wondering the same thing when all you've got is one mono instrument and one voice... which is why I posted all that about what I tried this time...

Oh, and I've worked out the source of the hiss... the BR1600 itself!! :D

I was racking my brains thinking SM57s can't be that noisy can they? There was nothing in the room except me and the kit. What was making that noise? Oh... the BR and its hard disk!

In the old place, the room was big enough that it didn't matter too much. In this room, I've got to watch what I'm doing - especially if I record with several mics (and record those signals not so hot)...

Andy, this is stunning! An amazing recording, honestly I am speechless. I read the essay before listening to it... even grasping something about how you set this up and how much time and effort went into the mix & mastering... I am still speechlesss
wonderful...

A.R. - Procol Harum do the best version of this song. Your version comes a very close second. Stunning in its entirety - no other word will do. Well done Sir.  8)
