For some reason XTC have never been in my record collection. After listening to this excellent cover I'll have to rectify that !

Great cover, clearly done with love.  Gorgeous guitar sounds, just a great execution all round.

It's difficult to overstate the importance of this song to me.  So in 1979 I was 14 years old and living in a council flat with a panoramic view out over Llanwern steelworks.  It was assumed in school that you would go work in British Steel, and many of those I was at school with did exactly that.  This song really made me think about that to the point where I told my careers advisor I didn't want a future in British Steel, instead I wanted to work in a recording studio (and so I went to Salford University to study acoustics).  I never did work in a recording studion, but did become a loudspeaker engineer with Harman Kardon.

Thanks for taking me back to those heady times and a song which litterally changed the course of my life.

Fantastic cover, Andy!

Your guitar tones and the drums are perfectly locked in, and so on-the-money, it's scary!

And great job on the vocals - a great fit for your style. Toward the end, I wanted it go on and on with the echoey 'Steel...' bits!! :)

WOW, Andy.  This is outstanding....I haven't listened to the song in 20 years...thank you!  Not to push for more, but how about "Generals and Majors" or "Senses Working Overtime".

Damn, this is good.  You really nailed it.

Replying as I listen.

Great guitar tone. Really fits the song.
I too would've liked to have heard the vocals a little higher in the mix early on.
However by the end, they seem to get louder & are spot on. Good backing vox too.
Remix maybe? Love the drum flange/phase too.

Going to listen again as I'm loving this one more by the minute!

Cool
