A few months ago I was watching a drum demo video on Youtube, by a guy named Todd Sucherman. I had never heard of him before, but he was excellent. The description indicated that he was the drummer for 'Styx' for the last 27 years. Until that moment I didn't realize that they still existed. Seems they have been touring every year since 1996. I was never a big fan, but I remember liking some of their radio hits in the 70s and 80s.

To make a long story longer, They have also released a couple new albums in recent years (unusual for an old legacy band), 'The Mission' in 2017, and 'Crash of the Crown' in 2021. Both are excellent recordings, with a little taste of their early prog roots. This is Todd Sucherman recreating his drum performance for 'Red Storm' from 'The Mission'. Note that the verses are in 5/4, the choruses are in 6/8, and the first half of the instrumental is in 7/4, before changing to 6/8 to transition to the last chorus. Tommy Shaw and James Young are still wielding the axes for this band, and most of them have been there for at least 20 years. Their first album was released in 1972!

I am glad I got to see this.  I have been a big STyx fan since even before Tommy Shaw was in the band.  I have seen them a number of times and a few times in the last 5 years.  Their original drummer and bass player were brothers.  He was excellent as well.  I have heard Todd play but never really got to focus on his work... just remembering that I thought he was fantastic in the band.  As fond of Styx as I am I don't really think of them as Styx anymore because of the removal of Dennis DeYoung from the band.  Styx could never be Styx with out him.  I generally am not a person that quits listening to bands when some one leaves (Tommy Shaw left, came back, there were bad feelings etc... it is a long story and a lot of he said/ he said)... and I didn't this time either but Styx could never write the music they did with Dennis DeYoung gone... Sure someone can live without their right arm... but how well? 
for me Styx is a top 5 US band all time... I realize this is only my opinion... but they are that big for me... and they probably work too much now.  I saw them a few years ago and Joan Jett I thought blew them away (and trust me I love Styx so that wasn't easy to admit)... but they looked tired to me... I did get a cool thing though... I got to shake hands with James Young./// that was cool

Stephen, it's good to see that Chuck still travels with them, and plays a few songs with them. I guess I can understand guys in their 60s and 70s losing a step. From the Youtube videos I've seen, they still have the talent, if not the energy level. Tommy is 69 and JY is 73 now!
