What are you listening to right now?

A mainstream one, but I've been giving Iron Maiden's new album a spin, the first time I've properly tried to get back into them since being turned off hard by The Final Frontier (2010) and never caring for The Book of Souls (2015).


It's pretty good! A bit repetitive and plodding in areas which I feel lets the overall album flow down, but in general I do prefer modern Maiden's dabbling with darker heavy prog than trying to simply try to recapture the old days. I also like that given Bruce's age and presumably the effects of tongue cancer his voice has changed, but they've wisely utilised this change of style in some tracks and used his new gruffer low range, rather than trying to pretend it hasn't happened.


I do dig bands that embrace their years.

I still prefer the Dance of Death (2003)/A Matter of Life and Death (2006) though for albums that are tighter, but there's no denying there's been some amazing tracks in the newest releases.

Max Webster was very popular in Toronto in the 1970s. They often opened for Rush. I've seen them several times. Their very weird lyrics were written by Pye Dubois who was not officially a member of the band but collaborated with them on most of their recordings providing the lyrics. He was also credited as co-writer on several Rush songs including Tom Sawyer, Force Ten, and Test for Echo. Max Webster's guitarist and singer, Kim Mitchell, went on to have a successful solo career. And he was a DJ for a popular Toronto classic rock radio station from 2004 to 2015.

Some of my favourite Max Webster songs are "Oh War!", "In Context of the Moon", and "Gravity", all from their 1977 album "High Class in Borrowed Shoes". And "Toronto Tontos" from their debut album.
