So... 30 years ago, a pedal steel guitarist in Denver gave me a mix tape that changed my life. It was a bunch of music from around Africa. The music catalyzed my idle curiosity about Africa and turned it into, "Hell yes I'm going there."

One of the songs on the mix tape was "Maloba D'Amour;" a wonderful cover of Buddy Holly's "Words of Love." I tried once or twice over the years to find the artist or the song online. Today, inspired by the 50's Rock & Roll Fest, I tried again and...




Unfortunately, there is not a YouTube video or any (legal) way to hear the song online for free, but you can get the idea from the song preview on Amazon.com.

Mystery solved: That video is blocked in Madagascar for some reason, which is why it didn't show up in my YouTube search results. I hadn't thought of that, so I didn't use my proxy server trick. I bought the digital album from Amazon.com. Hopefully some old guy in Kenya will get a nickel today.

I have seen this several time before, but it just slayed me. Campy but friggin' great. The choir in the droogie hats was a nice touch. They should have had white jumpsuits, though. The expressions on Page, Plant, and Jones as the song progresses are priceless.
