I recently re-acquired my BR-1600, so this was one take with everything mic'd up. We had slight technical difficulties with the drum kit that I didn't see coming. The snare mic pointed straight up after a couple hours of practice, and the Tom mic leaned hard left... As a result, not much snare, but plenty of hi hat, and the fills jump right at you.

I'd appreciate any tips on the mix that I can get. My ear is developing a lot, but the production skills still lack.

I'm the guitar in the right channel (muted rhythm), you know the one that drops out at the end because I forgot where we were.... yeah that one.

** EDIT ** I posted this song once before, recorded at a bar. Sorry for the double post.

Tangled Wires

You could post this 10 times for all I care Tony, loved the version in the bar and loved this.

With regard to the production, I listened to this a couple of times on cans and felt that the drums could come up a bit, they sounded a little lost in the mix at times to me.

I thought the vocals and guitars were beautifully balanced.

In terms of the performance, it was faultless...superb skills all round.

Terrific cover so well played enjoyed this so much agree with TW the drums could be higher in the mix but this dose,nt detract from a great preformace, loved it!!!

Great job Tony, you kind of addressed the drum issue and that's exactly how it sounded to me lot's of hat and cymbal light on the snare, so that seems like a set up/stand issue. I'm listening on crap computer speakers and I'm not getting much bass but there isn't much bass in these speakers. I do like to listen to my mixes on as many different speakers and often find the best mix is the one that sounds right through the crappiest speakers.
You guys do this one well! I'm so jealous of you, I want a 1600 real bad!!!!!!!!!
Rock on!

Sweet Jim Caviezel this is incredible!! Love the performance and recording, way to go bro! You got the rhythm, lead and vox dialed right in and the bass sounds great. Damn, the vox sound awesome.

Drums are tough to record - You've done exceptionally well with them even with your technical problems. Maybe use an overhead condenser (or two) hung from the ceiling to give it some air.

Yes, I love it. You guys rule!

Thanks all. I've been wondering about hanging a couple condenser mics. What I'm afraid of is having 8 inputs, and using 6 or 7 on drums alone, that kinda blows.

This isn't one I'd put on a demo, simply for the drum problem, but other than that, it's pretty tight. I'll workout the hardware issues on the existing mics, but could use some ideas on how to improve the kit overall.

Options:

condenser mics hanging - can I drop the tom mics to reduce the total number of mics?

recording the bass and vocals on playback - The 2 guitars are dependent on each other, so they have to be recorded together.

What else?

Tony... This is really an ace recording other than the drums. Dont beat yourself up though...I never achieved any live recordings of this calliber. Suggest that your drummer look into wireless ear monitors if your gonna be using that many mics... He will be able to hear the mix much better plus it will cut down on feedback issues. I made the   switch last year and kicked myself in the ass for not having done it sooner. Im currently using the Galaxy band pack system which comes with 5 belt packs for around 600.00 us.

Again... Great recording... So good to hear you livin your dream. Youll be able to take these experiences with you to the grave.

also he may want to get a seperate mixer.. This way all of the channels can be set and left alone. you may have to do some minor tweeking as rooms change, but it sure saves in set up time. Recommend any yamaha mixer with built in compression.
