Quote from: phantasm777 on February 23, 2012, 09:06:20 AMbruno, a wav file is too big to email most people. typically it would have to be a mp3. why dont you and i do hendrix - fire. i'll do bass and drums. just a suggestion. once i do my tracks i send them to you, you import them to your recording program and then do the same mixing as you would as if they were all your tracks.

The MP3 format adds space to the beginning of the file which makes it very hard to synchronize with other tracks. Also, MP3 uses lossy compression which degrades the quality of the music. So I'd recommend using WAV, flac, or some other lossless format. To get around the file size problem, many of us use SkyDrive. It's free and gives you 25GB of web storage where you can upload your WAV files. You then send your collaborators an email containing a link to the files so they can download them and import them into their recorder or software DAW. Another web storage service I just found yesterday is AnonStorage.net. It too is free and has no storage limits, although there is currently a glitch which limits individual files to 20 MB, but they hope to fix that within a week.

You can also use wetransfer to send and receive large files.

http://www.wetransfer.com

File transfers are free unless the file or files transferred exceeds 2 gigabytes in size, per session.
No limit on the total number of transfers per day.

Zip them and send them.

All- many thanks for all your kind comments - I really appreciate it.

@phantasm777 - yeah, we can try Fire - I need to learn it first, I'll need to dust off my wah-wah :-)

Take the point over file size, however if we can use WAV over a file share - it maintains the sound quality. Plus the BR1600 doesn't support MP3's - so I'd need to convert back and forth, and I suspect it would really degrade sound quality - but hey, this is a learning experience!

Bruno, use WAV files for all transfers and editing. Do not mix down to an MP3 until all work is done and mastering is finished. Then set the options as high as possible, consistent with not making the MP3 too large to post here.

I try to keep my MP3 file size to no more than 6 megs.

im just going to do wav files and link them to my site and give the link to whomever i collab with. seems the easiest for me.

Speed Demon

An excellent way to do it, Frank.

I'm getting Mrs Demon to set up a site for me, so I can do the same. She's good at it.

I'm totally illiterate when it comes to creating a web site. No strings attached to it? Alien to me.

@phantasm - sounds like a plan :-)

@SD - thanks for you help & comments

Also, I fancy do a collab version of one of my all time favourites (the family groan) - the magnificent Hocus Pocus by Focus - you know it has to be done :-)

Who's going to do the vocal?

Probably need to clamp a vice-grip on his foreskin just to make sure the falsetto notes do not taper down to a baritone.
