I just noticed that Johnny Otis died January 17th, aged 90. He discovered Etta James and produced her first hit "Roll With Me Henry" (aka "Dance With Me Henry" or "The Wallflower"). What a coincidence that they should die just three days apart.

Johnny Otis wrote "Willie and the Hand Jive" which was a hit for him in 1958. Eric Clapton covered the song on his 1974 album "461 Ocean Boulevard".

His backup singers were called The Three Tons of Joy.   (I'm not kidding. That was their name.)

He also produced the original recording of Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton (before Elvis covered it). Here she is singing it in 1965 with Buddy Guy on guitar.
