Acoustic instrument and vocal mics

Would you bother with 2 separate mics if you were recording, say, vocals and acoustic guitar:-
  • at the same time? (i.e. in one take)
  • separately? (i.e. in two takes)

Apart from the often recommended Shure SM57 and 58 what other mics are you using that your can either recommend or advise against. I'm yet to buy my recorder (sometime in the next month I expect) so I think I have to know what I'm going to be doing with the mic and pre-amp (if needed) before I decide on the recorder.

I know there's a few posts on mics elsewhere I've half-read a few already but I'm going to go and look at those sometime later today when I've got a bit more free time.

I'd do it in 2 takes, using the BR's in-built mic. I've never used an external mic, because the one on the BR sounds fine to me.

It would be hard to do both simultaneously (because of positioning) unless you record your vocals on the inbuilt mic and record the guitar via a lead.

It's worth experimenting with, and I've got some good 'distant' backing vocals by singing whilst I'm recording the acoustic guitar part.

I've also managed to get a half-decent 'live' recording which went into the BR via a mixing desk.
