Surrogate Performing?

It has hit me over the last few weeks that when I post new songs, whether covers or originals that in waiting for comments and feedback that this is the type of heart on sleeve anticipation I used to get from performing live... does anyone else feel like this?

Don't get me wrong, I think the site is fabulous, and there really is not just some oustanding and talented contributors, it's the variety of genres and truly www that I think is amazing, but checking through some of the threads it seems to have started life as a tech forum for BR/ recording and grown into a quite amazing site

Anyway, just a thought? And though I am not a performer anymore, I hope to God at least some of the talented guys on here are still performing!

I know what you mean Andy, I think it just means you get a kick out of it!!

You can't beat performing live when your happy in the band but when you're not it can be a massive pain and performing isnt fun anymore.

You kind of get a similar enjoyment with this forum without any of the hassles!!

When you can create a song, realize it and share it, it's the absolute best. And the fact that someone would take the time to honor it with a listen and comment is priceless.

I think I have an easier time playing in front of people than posting something - Not sure why.

Spot on Mark, I played in various bands until I was in my early 50's and then stopped playing entirely. This site gave me back the desire to play, it gives me applause (when deserved) and offers help and suggestions when I'm too close to see the obvious. I also feel that buzz of expectation when I've posted and truly appreciate any feedback that comes my way.

 great post andy

have to say I agree with the above comments-
There is a certain buzz in finishing something and posting -
and as Willie has said
QuoteI also feel that buzz of expectation when I've posted and truly appreciate any feedback that comes my way.
posting to unknown friends on the site can be harder than live gigging

I've been thinking about this very topic lately. I've been writing songs for over 20 yrs. now (I'm 38) and it's just something I do, they come to me and I used to remember them all; now I need to write & record quickly or they're gone much faster. I always played when I could (mostly for free) and I did open mic's regularly. I lived in Nashville for a year and played on great stages (for free) did the Bluebird a bunch of times, met great people, but really got nowhere. Had the opportunity to by an established entertainment  company in FL ( www.clowningaroundtampa.com ) and gave up on the professional songwriting/performing dream and was very happy as a clown and a professional entertainer. About 5 years ago when my kids where real little I started writing kids songs and developed Silly Sam the Music Man ( www.youtube.com/sillysamsings ) and now 90% of my work is playing guitar. I also learned 6 hours of cover music and started playing beach gigs and such. I perform solo 6 days a week (sometimes 7) and I often get more nervous that you guy's won't like my tunes.
I use my br for work every week and I needed the yahoo group desperately for the user knowledge. Now since really diving into songcrafters, it has lit a creative fire in way to many ways.
Each of you has so much creativity  and talent I'm surprised to see so many of you not gigging more. I love checking out what's been written or covered and often feel compelled to comment, even though I do feel rather unqualified, luckily you guy's do such an amazing job there are only positive comments to make. Knowing someone is taking the time to really listen to your tune and maybe even commenting is so important to growing as a musician/songwriter. We could try and say we only write for ourselves but music is just so much more than that! I'm surprised at how much this site has become part of my life, and I'm grateful that my mp3 player overflowith with brilliant music!
I guess you know me now...sorry!
Rock on!

I don't think it's a surrogate but yes is emotioning me too. I think even if I would perform (nea!) I would search for you songcrafters the same cause is here I can feel the real love for writing songs. It is a madness that here is allowed and respected, and when a song is good here, damn is really good - and that's why I'm sometimes so happy with your comments and my heart have a little tremble. amen ;-)
