So I set out a week and a half ago to write the most commercial tune I could muster. I wrote it in a few days and started recording, but with limited time to record lately it was little by little. I really wanted a sax solo (instead of guitar) but my fingers just couldn't play what I hear in my head, so scrap the sax for now. Then i read and hear Greeny's taxi inspired brilliance and it got me thinking deeper about this tune which isn't my favorite I've written but I do like alot. I think in some ways i succeeded in what I set out to do ( I think it's kinda Maerzish ) but it's also very much me, which I don't think is very commercial, very wordy and a little chordie. Anyway all this thinking got me a headache and an OK song that I think in a more talented producers hands it might be something...but it's probably just more crap!
Used To Feel
written, performed, produced by Hook
Sun shines down with a smile and shades
all my troubles melt away
fear disappears like a storm dissipates
no more worry no more hate
I wish I could find that place
some Zen retreat to which I can escape
& relinquish myself of all responsibilities
& indulge in a little tranquility

It's not too late
to pull it all together & start to emulate
all the silly old ideals
all the dreams, the desires,
& the passion & the purpose
that we used to feel

Sky so blue with endless possibilities
I think I'll take advantage of all these amenities
& hit the beach & ride the waves
head for the horizon & try to save
that spark, that ember, that tiny flame
that burns & yearns & we try to contain
wrap it up nice & tight in barbed wire
I want to let it out an all consuming fire

It's not too late
to pull it all together & start to emulate
all the silly old ideals
all the dreams, the desires,
& the passion & the purpose
that we used to feel

Now the moon sits high to illuminate the sky
but is lights a little deeper it's not quite as bright
casting shadows all around where shadows shouldn't be
like a spotlight the moon finds the shadows in me
there is no denying the choices I've made
all the abrupt endings & the gentle fades
as I recollect & reminisce
I ask of all I've done have I done my best

It's not too late
to pull it all together & start to emulate
all the silly old ideals
all the dreams, the desires,
& the passion & the purpose
that we used to feel

Very fresh and cool! Commercial in positive way, yes...!! Great melodies and superb singing as usual by you! The guitar solo at 2 minutes is very good...I like the tones! This is pop song perfection, Hook!! I really enjoyed it!

Guys, I'm really glad you all have no commercial success. Seriously! Because if you were successful, you would not deliver such great work anymore. It would degrade to faceless pabulum.

This is another little gem. Please stay as natural and authentic as you are now!

Certainly not crap! Really enjoyed this as well, heartfelt lyrics delivered with a great vocal, it's upbeat with a nice fresh sound but the subject matter is more thought provoking - liked it loads!

very cool

To my ears it sounds like an old Eric Clapton kind of song, from the early 70's, re-done by somebody like Dave Matthews Band.............which is my way of saying I like it.  It doesn't sound overly commercial at all.  I can see this one going down real good live, extend that solo a bit, jam band it up a tad, and you have a monster on your hands.

Alternate Tunings: CAUTION: your fingers have to be in different places

sounds perfect for this sunny cool clear day were having over here in Sheffield.....a real catchy melody......not too wordy at all....loved all the purpose and the passion.........guitar solo's great but would like it longer .........but I do think when your fingers do what there told with the sax it will take it to a whole new level of dreamy sunny day.......loved it

I think it's a very catchy tune - Great flavor to it, an enjoyable listen! I think you made a better choice with the guitar solo and it fits in great.

A well crafted song!

Not crap at all!  :)

Quite an energetic and accomplished sounding song, if you ask me. And you really fit a lot of words in there! Dug the tasty guitar solos as well.

Great vox. all the parts are very clear. nicely recorded. It feels as if the tempo is a bit too fast for the words comfort zone IMO.  great playing and singing and a fine concept.
