That's brit pop on its best, both musically and lyrically!! Fantastic tune and gentle voice as always! Thanks for adding lyrics. I tried to find out Swanee...what is it?

'Up the Swanee' is a British expression for when things go wrong or are lost / wasted- e.g. "I just put a bet on that horse, and the f*cker fell at the first fence. That's another tenner up the swanee..."

It's the same as 'up the creek without a paddle'

There's a song called up the swanee river isn't there?

'Way down upon the Swanee River' from Old Folks at Home by Stephen Foster

Some really nice spots of harmony placed in there and really liked when the lead guitar kicked in near the end.

These days I merely dabble at being old and wise.
But I swear, I used to absolutely excel at being young and stupid.

Thanks for the explanation...I was on right track...

Have I ever told you how much you're like an Ogre? I mean an onion? I love your layers.  You build a track so well, and your use of guitars is always much deeper than how I use guitars. It's a little wonder every time I listen to one of your tracks. On this particular one I like the vocals and the melody quite a bit. The chorus is catchy but not too catchy. It's just right if you know what I mean.
