hello again...

is it possible to back up song data by just connecting the micro BR to a PC with a USB cable? as supposed to using a card reader?

Certainly. In fact, I don't think any of the BR manuals even mention card readers. So, the manuals describe how to backup using only the BR, a USB cable, and your computer. See pages 104 and 105 of the Micro BR manual, 3rd edition (page 100 in the original manual).

Basically, when your Micro BR is connected to your computer with a USB cable, the Micro BR is a card reader. I mean, your computer will see the Micro BR as a USB Storage Device, which is the same way it sees a card reader. However, card readers are almost always USB 2.0, while the Micro BR uses the slower USB 1.1 (at least, I think it does, as I've seen nothing to suggest that it's USB 2.0). So, you might find that the card reader is a bit faster when backing up a full 1GB memory card. But, if you've only recorded one or two songs and the card is mostly empty, you might not notice much difference in speed.

Just make sure you "safely remove" the USB connection prior to unplugging the USB cable or else you can seriously mess up your memory card, requiring a re-format.

You'll see the icon on your taskbar (using windows) in the bottem right corner, looks like a little HDD with a green arrow on top, just double click it, then double click "USB Mass Storage Device," select the Boss Micro BR from the list and stop the USB device.

The MicroBR will now say, safe to disconnect, then your good to go.

It does mention this in the manual, but I personally didn't read it, and had to learn the hard way.
