I was at the jam pad today... and my buddy brought this thing with antenas... rods... and lots of knobs attached to a wood block... I was at a loss when he started playing it. It's called a theremin apparently they've been around for a while, but I've never seen nor heard of it till now... Well I was impressed with it's versatility. Something to add to the studio perhaps??? We'll see... check this out.

I checked the above vid out, sounds like he's making the noise himself to me, :).

This Theramin looks a bit different.

They're as cool as, a bugger to play. If you're going to get one try the type with two antenas, you can control pich and volume.

I made one. I haven't seen it for ages....

Actually, that theremin in the first clip is the real deal. There are a couple of different kinds of instruments out there called 'theremin'.

The traditional theremin has separate pitch and volume antennae, and is played entirely 'in the air' by the proximity and motion of your hands to the antennae (i.e., there is no physical contact with any part on the theremin while playing). This is based on the design by the inventor, Leon Theremin. Moog and a couple of much smaller manufacturers still manufacture theremins like this.

It's a fascinating instrument - more info here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin

The kind used by the Beach Boys in 'Good Vibrations' is what's most often referred to as an electro-theremin. It shares some of the same concepts as a theremin (oscillators for pitch and amplitude control, and some kind of proximity effect to play pitch) but often feature one or more extra controls that are worked manually. This is the basis for a lot of modern 'theremins' you see today. There are also a bunch of other instruments that share theremin attributes (reference the wikipedia article).

Here is the moog one with a better model citizen sampling it! ;D

The theremin(not this model of course) is the one Jimmy Page uses on stage on Song Remains the Same Video
for Whole Lotta Love.

My girlfriend just came in asking what the racket was!  :D :D :D

"What racket?", said I...  ;)

Here's another beautiful example, the theremin accompanied by one of my favorites - the Novachord.
