Turn Insert Effects off on 1 channel

Hi all. Just joined this site but have been having a good read for a few days and love this place.

I have a Boss BR-800 and have been reasonably happy with it but want to get to know it better. My problem isnt too large but cant find a way to sort it. Lets say I am recording gtr/vox simul. DI  for gtr and xlr for mic. What if I want to use a gtr input effect preset but have the vocal clean. Is this possible, I dont think so. I know I can use the simul effct bank and adjust accordingly. But sometimes I just want to pick a very specific gtr bank preset and leave the vocal clean. Its annoying.

One last thing, I find that my headphone mix is too quiet even with headphone volume increase. Anyone else get this?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Richard

The only way to record guitar and vocals simultaneously with different effects is to set the input to GTR & INPUT4, and the mode to SIMUL REC (so guitar and vocals will each go to separate tracks), then use the SIMUL effects bank. You can then turn off the effects on the Mic input and adjust the guitar effects to your liking.

Of course, you could record both the guitar and vocals without any effects, then add effects later in bounce mode.

Or you could record the guitar and vocals in separate takes rather than simultaneously.

I don't have a BR-800 but I sometimes find the headphone level a bit low on my BR-864 too. It might be a common problem with all of the BRs. You can connect the BR-800's Line Out to some form of amplification that has a headphone jack, such as your home stereo system or a mixer. Then use that system's headphone jack instead of the BR's.

Or you could buy a headphone amplifier such as the Behringer HA400 or AMP800. These allow up to 4 people to listen simultaneously using headphones, with separate level controls for each person. That may not be of much interest to you, but they do have better gain than the BR and they're fairly inexpensive.

If you do it often, it can be worthwile to make your own simul-patches, by disabling the mic fx on a preset and saving it as a user patch. I've done that on the ones I use most frequeltly

I think it's the other way around ;) I usually have to reduce the output volume when mastering or bouncing.

Oh well ........

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. Yeah, I was hoping I could load up the gtr effect bank and disable the effects for the vocals. I know if I mess about with simul effects I can pretty much create most of the gtr bank effects but for speed I sometimes wish I could go to guitar only.

With regard to volume, its fine during mixdown. Its just the vocal input peaks when my ear volume is still quite low. I have hooked the br up to an old soundcraft mixer and take the headphone feed from that.

Again thanks for the replies, that answers that.
