In my limited experience I've used a Zoom G2.1U for guitar and a Zoom B2.1 for bass, both worked fine plugged straight into the guitar input with Boss effects on and off (ie you can combine external effects with onboard Boss effects or just have all the effects from the pedal). A decent pedalboard should be no different from a multi-effects unit like the Zoom or Pod.
