OK, I'll do a bit of rooting around (not Ozzy stylee) and I'll get back to you.

If the worst comes to the worst, you will be able to copy the stuff off your hard drive onto gringos. Then rebuild the laptop and copy it back.

Panic mildly only.

SdC

-Boot from a Windows CD
-From menu "setup or repair", choose setup
-The setup should now detect your existing Windows install on the C: drive
-Select Repair option.
Better instructions: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

You may be left with a few gremlins after the repair, but Windows should boot ok, and your precious files will not be deleted in the process.

Don't reformat the drive.  Get a new drive, and once you are squared away with system software, use the old one as a slave.  There is a good chance you will be able to save your data.

Instead of taking everyone's advice, I stick to working with Flash Harry exclusively. Too many chefs can ruin the stew. I would also cut and run from this thread, even though everyone's intentions are good.
