What is your favorite Progressive Rock song ?

Yeah I did notice the resemblance. Given my surname and my admiration for Mr Levin, I always wanted a Chapman Stick.  I've never seen one for sale - which is just as well.  It's taken me til my 50's to get remarkably average on guitar and keys.  I doubt that I have enough years left to learn to play a stick.

So do you think the new drummer for DT will be as good as Portnoy ?

Also my favorite prog song would probably be Hemispheres from Rush or Anesthetize from Porcupine Tree

Quote from: oldbaldeaglehead on June 23, 2011, 12:34:08 PMlike chip i pretty much went off prog too. for me it was around topographic oceans it got a bit pretentious as if it wasn't before that, then punk hit like a breath of fresh air. that said i always loved van der graaf generator, and always will, imho their old stuff still sound fresh today, they had an anarchic vibe and always did their own thing, yeah they where pretentious at times but hey who isnt.

Yes, that just about sums it up. The last straw was the day I went to see Yes perform 'Topographic oceans' in all it's pomp and nonesense. From that day on Prog was pretty much erased from the memory. Punk saved the day and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers came in with some much needed short snappy tuneful songs, I was released from the chains of quite frankly, overblown self indulgent ramblings. Never looked back, and never listened to any of it again since, apart from the Yes album and early Hawkwind ( who at that point I would describe as 'Space rockers') As for the prog rock album collection, I gave them or chucked them away.

Now I can listen to Hank Williams and his drifting cowboys and think wow.
Sweet young thing aint sweet no more.

Mike Portnoy is a tough act to follow - although Mike Mangini is no slouch.  The new album is due for release in September so I guess we will know soon.

Transatlantic opened and closed a recent prog cruise.  They invited up Adrian Below for "Indiscipline" and Jon Anderson for "Long Distance Runaround," "And You and I," "Starship Trooper," and "The Revealing Science of God" to close out the week.  I was happy to see Jon Anderson backed by a band again.

Wish I went as I believe it sailed from Florida. The crowd must have been interesting.

"Return of the Giant Hogweed" is one of my favourite Genesis songs. Heracleum mantegazzianum.

Steve Hackett was doing two-handed tapping years before Eddie Van Halen.
