What is your favorite Progressive Rock song ?

Greeny

It's not 70's 'classic' prog, but I guess this counts. It's not just a prog song I like... it's a song I love, full stop. Superb songwriting and lyrical imagery.

The one I am just writing. Getting back into doing some music and of course it's heavy prog!

Seriously though, there can only be one - Supper's Ready by Genesis. It is 25 minutes long and epitomises everything that was good about prog rock - incredible mood changes, complex, dense music and a majestic ending (without being too pretentious). The absolute apex of what prog stood for. And to see it performed live by the original band was pretty good also.

Man Erg is VdGG's finest hour IMO, a stunning and incredibly scary piece of music. But pipped by Supper's Ready.

Dave, if you want to check out some really good modern prog rock, download "The Octopus" by Amplifier. An incerdible double album by a band that have merged prog with heavy rock with a modern twist.

Cheers,

Nigel

Either "Whitewater" or "Spaceship Landing" by Kyuss. They are definitely not labeled prog, but it fits the bill.

I'm not familiar with all the tunes/bands mentioned.  I'll have to check them out later.

A bit safe for a choice, but I might go with "Close to the Edge" by Yes.  Has a little bit of everything in there.  For something a bit more contemporary, I'd have to say "The Great Nothing" by Spock's Beard.

Henny, have you listened to Transatlantic?  Pete Trewavas of Marillion is in it.

It's not your fault. YouTube has started using these shortcut URLs like http://youtu.be/VyJBNZ4i4Yc which don't work with our youtube tags. But if you copy the URL from the address bar of your browser instead, it will work just fine with our youtube tags. For example, the address bar URL for the ELP video in your previous message is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyJBNZ4i4Yc

Paste that between the youtube tags like this:

Alternatively, you can use their shortcut URL and strip off everything except the unique ID number at the end:

So instead of this:

Use this:

If I get a chance someday, I'll see if I can modify our youtube tag so that it accepts these new sortcut URLs that YouTube is using without having to edit them.

I have so many favourite prog rock songs that it's impossible to pick just one. So I'll post a few that spring to mind.

Used to play this in a band I was in ages ago.

Always loved this one. Couldn't find a YouTube video with decent sound so I went with Grooveshark.
