ever present crackling noise

Started by kinouk, December 10, 2008, 12:43:16 PM

my br makes a loud and annoying crackling noise upon startup and remains constant while operating the unit. Any suggestions? Changing power source (batteries vs, adapter), sd card, headphone wires, factory reset or function (mp3 or other) has made no difference.

I have noticed this on a couple songs I have created.  However, I have not really had it happen when using the unit, alone(mic only, no inputs).

The cracks come in when I have my guitar plugged in, which makes me think it was either loose connections in my old guitar, or something with the BR jack.  These did appear on the mp3 export.  That being said, I had a couple pops through my headphones, that did not appear on my mp3 exports.

My first inclination is to tighten your jacks on your equipment and see what happens, or try some $25 Sony MDR-V150 headphones.  Second, I would try the Boss/Roland PSA-120 power supply.  Third, stay away from fluorescent lighting, tvs, speakers/stereos, and cell phones(esp. AT&T) when the unit is on.  Other than that, I'd ask for a replacment of the unit because of faulty jacks.

you mean the unit physically makes the noise, or you hear it on the speakers/headphones? if you hear it without any output plugged in, that doesnt sound too good. otherwise, perhaps you have the input settings a little off? just my 2cents there.

Yeah my BR, a Christmas present, suddenly started playing up recently as well. When I select GTR input there is constant and high volume "mains like" hum that moves the input level meters to about 50%. This happens whether I use batteries or AC adaptor.

I do not have the original sales docket and the store where I am told it was bought claims that they have no record of the serial number in their purchase data. So I'm basically screwed for warranty!

As I am a qualified electronic engineer, I decided to carefully open the unit and check the 1/2" jack and integrated termination switch. No problems there. The trouble is that I cannot find a circuit diagram and most components are SMD, so I decided to stop there and register on the forum. My guess is that one or more of the solid state input components have packed up, giving rise to a grounding problem, as the noise varies when I hold and release the device from my hand.

Apparently BOSS offer a 3 year warranty on the device. Does anyone know if this is a worldwide guarantee and if their agents in South Africa would be willing to at least take a look at my expensive paper weight?
