Cuthbert, the lyric is actually based on till-death-do-ye-part wedding vows. ;)

Now that is interesting. I always thought it was one of those songs that could be taken either way. I'm intrigued now!

I remember hearing this song way back in the Nineties and what immediately jumped out from my high school German class (which was a long time ago, even then  ;) ) was "you have me", and a polyglot friend insisted, no it's "you hate me" (hassen, nicht haben) and I then remembered that 'hasst' sounds exactly like 'hast', at least to my ears.

It's a song that can be endlessly debated.  :D

In fact, the 'hast' is just a part of the present perfect tense of the verb.
In English, it would be the simple past 'you asked me'.
In German, it translates as 'you have asked me' = du hast mich gefragt.
So, the 'you have'/'du hast' part is simply repeated to build up a kind of tension, and people think it means 'you hate', which basically sounds the same.

It's true 'du hast' could mean 'du hasst' (you hate), but it doesn't make sense in the context of the whole sentence 'du hast mich gefragt, und ich habe nichts gesagt' ('and I said nothing').

The song in part is a repetition of wedding vows - e.g. 'Will you be true to her until death do you part', etc. - and the resounding answer is 'nein'! (no).  ;)
