New track I recorded Sunday, realizing I didn't have the snare mic on after it was too late to re-record the drums. I didn't use a metronome and will probably end up re-doing it all from scratch... eventually.

Deadly track man, deadly.  Thats very impressive drumming.  I am just getting into drumming myself, having recently purchased a Roland HD-1 in a mad fit of GAS a couple of months ago.  I really like your bass, punchy and really tight with the drums.  Great track, I really like this.

So, no metranome hu?  If you don't mind asking, what is the work flow here, what gets recorded first, second, etc.  Do you record drums first, then add bass.  Or guitar first, then drums?  I am curious because I want to start recording stuff like this and I am struggling with how to record it.  There is no need for a metranome if you can play it as tight as this.

Thanks, honestly though I wasn't too happy with the drums on several parts timing wise. My methods vary, but for this track I just ended up recording drum patterns, then added the guitars and the bass last. - Usually I record the guitars first to a metronome, then add in the drums and tend to get better results, but I am still getting used to playing drums over a metronome with comfort and not feeling 'held back' I usually regret it at the end when I don't use a metronome, it makes editing parts so much easier and assigning rythmic effects etc... but sometimes it is cool to have a more "loose" tempo.

Thanks for listening.

Thanks for this great information.  I tend to use the guitar first (to a metranome), drums second, then bass on a lot of my songs....but my drums have always been machine drums so far.  Now that I am going to actually play the drums I wasn't sure what the "best" method would be.  I think I'll stick to guitar first, then drums as you suggest here.  Thanks man.

Yeah, I think it all has a lot to do with where your ideas for a song start at, sometimes for me it's a drum pattern, other times a bass line or guitar riff. One method I use for starting with drums first is get a riff in my head, original or just something you like with a cool rhythmic pattern to it as you record the drums. I don't think there is one "best" method, but surely something that can work better for the individual and all methods tend to have their pros and cons from my experience. I would say ultimately try all approaches possible and see what works out best for you... having the guitars first can help me come up with more intereactive drum patterns in a lot of cases. I am actually going to give a try again tonight at a drums first approach and this time add in bass second, as I tend to take up too much space for a bassline really fast if I start with guitars, I will post it up here if I have any luck with it.

This is a smooth track wel executed...great for a

Scorpios... I agree with everything you've said here. I've tried both ways... although without a meter I much more comfortable... playing live without a click has always been my preferred method; however, now that I'm recording I have to listen back to my flubs and blunders. Drums tend to stick out stick hits, clicks on the rims and so forth... everything has to be "Perfect". I think you have done awesome... if you are not using them yet... try some stereo condensor's. Also I like your idea of recording drums first... most of the time my song turns out totally different than what I had imagined in the beginning which is usually better than the song I had in my head. Great post bro.

Not being  a drummer I would not dare to comment on the method but all I can say this sound might fine to me excellent work.
