Remove effects from song

Started by knoble53, March 29, 2011, 06:34:14 PM

My teacher recorded a short part of my last lesson.  I just got the Micro BR, so I'm not really familiar with it.  The recording is in mp3 format and seems to have reverb & chorus on it.  Is there a way to remove that so I just have the dry sound from the guitar with no effects on play back?  Thanks

There are two kind of effects in the BR;  Insert Effects and Loop Effects. Once a recording is made with an insert effect, the effect is part of the recording. Trying to remove the effect would be a bit like trying to un-bake a cake to get the eggs back so you can make an omelette. :)  Chorus is an insert effect, so I'm afraid it's already part of the cake (recording) and you're stuck with it. But the good news is that reverb is a loop effect. Loop effects come after the BR's mixer section. So, in normal record mode, the loop effects are not recorded. By default, the reverb level on the Micro BR is set to 50 (in a range of 0-100). That is probably what you're hearing. To get rid of it, simply turn the reverb level down to 0 (see pages 76 and 77 of the Micro BR manual, 4th edition). Note that there is a separate reverb level for each track, the drum tracks, and the input. So make sure you're adjusting the right track. And reduce the reverb level on the Input if you don't want it on your own guitar as you play along.

In Bounce Mode and Mastering Mode, however, the loop effects come before the record tracks, so they will be recorded. So, if your teacher bounced or mastered the guitar tracks, then you're stuck with the reverb.

See this message for more on the difference between insert effects and loop effects and their positions in the signal chain for normal record mode vs. bounce mode:

Hi Knoble53,

If the guitar was recorded with the effects then there's really no way to remove them. If you want to record a dry track on the MBR make sure that the effects and reverb are not activated (OFF). You can also record with the effects on and choose Effects>Cursor>Loc>TR1>Value+>Input<Rec Dry> and you will hear the effects but the outcome is a dry track. Also the reverb level can be added or subtracted in track mode...press a TR button and scroll with the cursor until you find Track Reverb. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies.  I didn't think I could remove them, but I thought I'd ask.
