Hey admin
using vst instruments and effects outside the computer is possible with one these
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ReceptorRevC/
comes with all kinds of stuff
however it still will require a midi controller to fire it
I use an Axiom 49 by m-audio i got it for about $180-it's pretty cool has like 27 assignable sliders and rotary knobs as well as 8 drum pads too-it will do a lot things, but it is only a controiller-no internal sound-
Most any midi keyboard can used to trigger sounds-
VST instruments require a good sound card-or better yet  an audio interface that has midi ins/outs
there are so many different solutions-many are cheap

Concerning audio and midi in/out, doesn't the usb box below bypass your internal soundcard?  So audio is captured and played back through this instead of using the limited fidelity of my laptops internal soundcard?

Yes that would be used instead of the lappers s-card and would provide a midi in/out as well
I use an Ultralite which works under the same principle
