Exactly. We welcome uploads of new recordings by members who don't have anywhere else to host them, provided they don't go overboard. We've occasionally had a problem with a few new members who wanted to upload their entire back catalogue immediately upon joining. When that happens, we send them a friendly PM asking them to please limit their daily posting or link to files hosted elsewhere instead of uploading them to Songcrafters. We also point out that Songcrafters is generally for new recordings by our members rather than past recordings that are already hosted elsewhere on the web.

In this case, I noticed that Wildgeas had uploaded quite a lot and I was going to send him a PM, but I got distracted with some other things and cuthbert beat me to it. Here's the PM he sent:

Hi Wildgeas,

Welcome to Songcrafters!  :)  I'm one of the moderators here, and noticed that you have uploaded quite a few songs today.

In general, rather than uploading multiple songs directly to our servers, we prefer that new users posting their older material instead use one of our mp3 widgets in the New Message page, and then link to their mp3 that is already hosted at another site. This way, we can preserve our server space for our regular contributing members.

Please let me know if you need any assistance in linking to your hosted mp3 files rather than uploading them. Of course, if you create a new song for one of our festivals or in a collaboration with another Songcrafter, you are welcome to upload it directly to our servers. Likewise with any new material you create once you have become a regular contributing member of our community. Thanks for understanding, and let me know if anything is unclear.

Kind regards,
cuthbert

As you can see, it's worded in a friendly and helpful way, and offers assistance and further clarification, if needed. I'm sure that this could have been easily resolved to everyone's satisfaction if Wildgeas had replied to cuthbert's PM. But he chose not to. Instead, he deleted several of his songs and his account shortly after midnight this morning. Later this morning, I received the following email from him:

Please remove my account and all my MP3's from your server. Your site is not for me. Sorry.

Thanks,

Wildgeas

So I've done as he requested. All of his topics except this one have been removed. His account was already removed. He did that himself. I want to make it clear that this is his choice, not ours. This was a pretty minor problem which could have easily been resolved in a few PMs, but he chose to quit without any discussion instead.

That`s too bad Wildgeas!! I do wish you luck but i don`t think you`ll EVER find a more positive and greater site than this one. It`s not like you had any negative feedback from anyone. I had no idea you were even on here till last night and you were already deleted.

It`s just not cool to flood the board too much or everyone elses songs get a little hidden and not justifiably commented on as well. Nobody said they didn`t like your songs. There are rules here but it keeps the spammers and the kind of people that like to cause cyber pain out!! I tell a few people about this site but i don`t like to commercialize it too much just for the reason, i don`t need to be blamed for others misuse.

I like your tunes on AT. Anyways, hope all goes well with you.

Damn shame really........dude put up some great music, getting listens and comments, making new fans.........just don't flood the board with 20 songs in one day, and no comments on anyother stuff going down.......thats not too much to ask is it........put up a few, mingle a bit, hang with the folks, listen to others songs and comment.....sensible policy.  We don't want folks to show up, post 40 songs and then disappear.  The interaction is a really big part of this site, the good cheer and working together toward a common goal of making better and better music.  That is the nature of a forum based site, where the latest post goes to the top.  damn shame really

Song posts to this site should be like tomato wedges in a salad - not all in one area, not even in every bite. You got to spread them out for maximum enjoyment.

Well said, Dave. That's exactly the problem. Flooding the boards with one member's songs is unfair to the rest of the members. It's also a bad idea for the person posting because he's not going to get a lot of comments if he posts too many songs at once. It's better to limit posts to one or two songs per day. Songcrafters isn't going anywhere, so you can always post another song or two the next day or the day after that. Spreading out your posts over time will earn you a lot more respect from other members than dumping everything all at once.

I'm going to add a comment about over-posting in the welcome message that goes out to new members. Hopefully, that will prevent future misunderstandings like this one.
