a boook or movie and finally this came up .i have no sheet music to go by strictly from memory.

A great song and a fine cover Neil, but I'm afraid it doesn't qualify for FaBFest. FaBFest isn't about songs from movies. It's about songs based on a movie or book. In other words, the lyrics should be about the story and characters of the movie or book. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" was recorded by The Shirelles in 1960 but "Dirty Dancing" wasn't released until 1987, so the song obviously can't be based on the movie.

Most members will probably write an original song based on a movie or book, and that's great. But it's also possible to do a cover if you choose a song that was originally written about a movie or book. For example, you could cover the Weird Al Yankovic parodies "Yoda" and "The Saga Begins" which are based on the Star Wars films. Or you could do Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights", based on the Emily Brontë novel, or Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit"*, based on Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland".

Here are a couple of Wikipedia pages that list some other songs based on movies and books:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_that_retell_a_work_of_literature

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_based_on_a_film

Use those lists only as a guide. Not all of the songs qualify for FaBFest. For example, one of the items in the Wikipedia literature list is:

  • "Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin mentions names from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

This would not qualify for FaBFest. Merely mentioning names from a book isn't enough. The song has to be about the book and "Battle of Evermore" isn't about The Lord of the Rings, as far as I know.

* - That reminds me that I need to track down a couple of posts by Ferryman and DaSilvaSings and add their "White Rabbit" covers to FaBFest.

Nice Cover though Neil!

PS: 64guitars, would "The Book I Read" by the Talking Heads qualify?

I'm not familiar with the song but I just looked up the lyrics. Based on that, I'd say no, it doesn't qualify because it's not about the story and characters of a specific book.

Oh, hell! Now Alfredo has posted a cover of the theme from "Chariots of Fire" for FaBFest.

We can't very well include that when we didn't allow Neil's cover from Dirty Dancing.

I guess I better send Alfredo a PM to explain.

Oops! I meant to send that privately to the admin team rather than posting it here. I must be going senile. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I've explained to Alfredo in a PM and removed the FaBFest icon from his post.

Maybe we'll have a Movie Soundtracks festival someday. Seems like there are at least two members who would like that (and probably several more). If we do, I'll be sure to add yours and Alfredo's songs.
