Micro BR Drums

I now finally seem to be getting the hang of programming drums on the Micro BR, however one question I have is when you want to insert a fill for example. Everytime I try this, it would appear that the steps that follow this all shift up 1 measure, and I then have to go through each subsequent step and move it back one.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just what you have to do after you have inserted an additional pattern?

Any advice would be gratefully received :)

that sounded right ... at first ... but the only way to do that is in fact to do as daveboy suggested ...  to go through each subsequent step and move it back one.

Thanks SdC and Geir, looks as if the way I have been doing it, may be the only way.

Not a big hassle, its just that I couldn't see another way of doing it from looking in the manual.

I don't understand why you'd want to ADD a fill, because (as you say), it'll put everything out of step.

The way I do it is to simply REPLACE certain measures with the fill / pattern I need.

I record everything over one pattern (the main one that I'll use for the verses), then go in after I've recorded the music to edit each measure I want to change. This is also where I'll put a break pattern at the start and at the end.

Thanks Greeny, I have done exactly what you do in that record the music over one particular pattern, then make the last step to go back in and edit the drums to make them more interesting.

As an example I could have programmed measure 50 with one pattern, with a change to another pattern at measure 52. If, after having listened to the song back I wanted to add a further change at measure 51, I would insert this, but it would mean measure 52 going up to 53, and all subsequent patterns would shift up 1 measure too.

Perhaps the moral is to try and get it right the first time, to avoid this, or to replace them like you say :)

I think Roland made a big mistake in making the Starting Measure a user-specified parameter of each step in an arrangement. Instead, they should have given us a Step Length parameter. If we could specify the length of each step, there'd be no need to specify starting measures and inserting steps would be trivial.

A couple of tips to keep in mind when inserting steps:

  • Use the [REW]/[FF] buttons to navigate between steps instead of moving the cursor to the step number and pressing the VALUE [-] [+] buttons. This allows you to leave the cursor on the Starting Measure parameter as you move from step to step, which makes editing the starting measures much easier with fewer button presses.
  • Each step must have a starting measure that's higher than the previous one. This causes a problem if your arrangement has a step that's only one measure long and you want to increment it. For example, if step 4 starts at measure 31 and it's one measure long, then step 5 will start at measure 32. That means, if you increment step 4 to 32, it would have the same starting measure as step 5 and the BR won't allow that. The solution is to always start incrementing your steps from the end of the arrangement and work back. This guarantees that each step has a higher starting measure than the previous step.

The BR Rhythm Editor makes it easy to insert steps into an arrangement as it doesn't require you to specify a starting measure. It calculates that for you. Unfortunately, the BR Rhythm Editor isn't compatible with the Micro BR.

Just to encourage you, I struggled with the drums to start with. But it gets real easy real quick with a little bit of practice. Hang on in there!

This is good info.  I'd like to start working with the drums too, but have been a little afraid to mess with it.  I found some good YouTube vids that are really helpful.  I guess I'll just have to close my eyes, hold my nose, and jump in!   ;)

Hi Little chick, may I ask where these vids are on the tube?
I am also contemplating the drums but

Lets say, intro 4 bars, verse 8 bars, chorus 4 bars, verse 8 bars, bridge 4 bars, verse 8 bars finish.

I record using a simple pattern say rock 2 v2 all the way through, I want a fill at the transaction between  verse, chorus, verse, bridge, verse.. Can I play the song, stop where I want the fill then carry on with the pattern ( still listening to the recording) and do the same at the next point and so on. I know there are pre arranged / arrangements and the above example is probably one of them but even if it is, can you adjust the preset arrangement to your own liking. Coming from the analogue world into science fiction is rather daunting for us older types.
