Zoom R8

Just saw the Zoom R8.  Might be the BR-800 killer...:-) (just joking).  But it looks like you can load your own samples, and I prefer the physical interface.  It also looks like it has MIDI in/out, and acts as a rudimentary control surface (we'll see).

It'll be tough for me; I abandoned the BR-600/900CD for the most part for a netbook and Ableton Live, which works fine, but is a PITA to boot.  Well, ok, it's not THAT hard, but still, under pressure setting up it would be nice to have a plug and go..... (I  have an APC-40 at home)....

It may depend on effects; Boss's are gorgeous, but Zoom has been improving, for sure....

If it does, then I suspect that it's just midi over USB, like the BR-800. Judging from the labeling of the connectors in this photo, there are no standard MIDI 5-pin DIN connectors.

Neither. It's just me.  :)

I have to give credit to Frank53 for this. He referred to me as LXIV in a post in the Yahoo BossBR group and it took me a minute to figure out why. When I did, it made me laugh. Thanks, Frank.

The same thing happened just now with "Alexei V". I couldn't figure out why my Google search turned up nothing but Russian scientists. Then I thought about it a bit and it finally twigged. Good one, cuthbert!

Yes, but the BR-800 doesn't output midi over USB in real time (AFIK, anyway), so you can't drive a DAW.  I'm hoping the R8 will, so we can record out patterns as well as the sounds.

(I will NEVER understand why Roland can't write a simple "export as MIDI Type 1" file for their editor program....)

I hope they let us output MIDI and let us use our own samples; I'll have to wait for the manual, but after looking at the specs, I'm not optimistic about the latter.  I would like just ONE realistic handclap somewhere - all of the existing ones sound like multiple drunks at a bar.  I sample mine off of Flamenco records......
