Just got back from an open mic night

John and I went to a local cajun cafe (a pretty funky place) for an acoustic open mic.  We went on early, so we didn't know the caliber of talent there (pretty good...one duo really impressed).

Anyhoo, we ended up doing tunes that I've posted here previously.  It's not like we have a huge repertoire. We did "Soulshine" by Warren Haynes, a stripped down version of "Good love is on the way" by John Mayer (yes, I'm aware he is a-what's the word?-a douche), "Little Wing" by Jimi ---> our bizarre version of "Tomorrow Never Knows." The audience actually asked for one more, so we did the Kiss/Toad the Wet Sprocket tune (and recent post) "Rock and Roll All Nite." I was a little shocked at the request for another one after the Beatles tune as we went totally raga.  I wanted to see the faces, but lights were in my eyes. At least I was amused.

I am leading up to a big thank you to this wonderful community.  Were it not for the supportive and encouraging nature of this site, I don't think I would have done this. I'm not exactly brimmng with confidence, so the comments have meant a lot through the last few years.

I wish I had been there! No doubt in my mind your set sounded great and that everyone was going to love it.

Right on!

My sentiments indeed , but judging by your recordings of your live sessions over this time , people have been missing out on a lot of great music , i hope you continue the open mic's , because in the long run we will benifit from all this extra confidence

Well done buddy

You were born to do this. You can't contain all that guitar talent within your own four walls - time to share it with the world! And it's a great feeling to pull it off. Quite addictive, in fact. Sounds like it lit that fuse for you...

Yes, you were born to do this. You are a really talented guitarist and musician, and I for one would pay to see you live. It's great that you are getting out there and doing it. The acoustic stuff you have been posting lately is really strong and shows you can make it work with just guitar and vox.

Well done, it;s great fun isn't it!

Cheers,

Nigel

So good to hear this Blooby, you are a real natural talented musician.  Add to that the incredible vocals of John, what a combo.  I would drive across town to see you two guys, heck, I may even drive to the next city,  good real, raw talent is hard to come by.  I bet it sounded fantastic.

No.  Never thought to.  I'm sure it was similar to what I've posted except for all the incidental fills I do to keep myself awake.

What I failed to mention about the evening was that another acquaintance asked me to play with him.  When he showed up, he had a Telecaster, large amp about the size of a Fender Bassman, a Zoom multi-effects box, and three (yes, three) Boss distortion boxes lined up (a blues driver, a DS-1, and a Metal Zone).  I saw this as stretching the boundaries a tad of what the concept of an open-mic night is, so I yanked out my cord (causing that nasty "KKKCCHHHUHH!" sound in the PA) and walked off the stage after two songs.

Thanks for all your kind words, people.
