hey hey, ...No Ted it's not me on the accordion..in fact it's a 'Usertrack' in Band in a box jargon, there are 'realtracks' which are played by real musicians, usually Nashville studio 'bigwigs'...and Usertracks which are tracks 'made' by Band in a Box users who sample their instruments...

...my dream would be to have a bandoneon (but I've stopped dreaming about instruments, my wife doesn't agree after 22 guitars in my attic, she thinks that's enough!)

This is so beautiful - the gentle Mariachi textures – and beautifully done.

I have a few things to say about the Mexican-American border. I'll try to keep it musical.

I'm an unsophisticated fan of Mariachi music. I don't know the names of the sub-genres. I divide it into two broad categories: (1) Has accordion — which I prefer, and (2) Has violins and orchestration — which'll do in a pinch. Growing up in Arizona, Mexico was always within easy reach – and good Mexican restaurants on the US side with live music. I would run into Mariachi music from time to time growing up, and at some point it grabbed me. I'm not an aficionado by any stretch, but when visiting Mexico, I'd seek it out. Sadly, in my digital collection, I think I have but a single album of Mariachi music: Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, and it's the violin kind. I purchased it on cassette directly in Mexico (and converted to digital myself). Certainly in my storage unit I have more Mariachi cassettes.

What I'm saying is: I'm happy to have a new facsimile of the has accordion kind.

In 2012 some friends of mine in Arizona put together a 2-CD compilation called Border Songs, spoken word and music addressing the catastrophic effects of US border policy. It featured 30 artists, including Pete Seeger, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Amos Lee, and Tom Russell. It may have been the last album Pete Seeger contributed to while he was alive. (I probably could have finagled my way onto this album if only I'd written and recorded a song.) The CD raised about $100,000 for the organization No More Deaths. I wonder if they approached Ry Cooder about using this song. But if you want a heavy dose of songs about the US-Mexico border, I can hook you up.

Again: Beautifully done!

This has been bugging me since I first uploaded it so I re-did the backing vocals which were the main out of key bit and re-mixed it as I still had all the tracks on my BR800. Left the main vocal but, to me, overall it sounds a bit better.

This version certainly isn't! I think i got sidetracked with the longwinded procedure it took to make the original. I've listened to these podcasts, interviews etc. and i remember being bored of one such thing. And i think that leaked into my appreciation of this song... The original version.

ODH is in a class of his own. He makes them, i listen. I'm simple like that!

Thanks for clarifying, Zolt.

What you said is kind of what I was getting at. I like the original and it evokes a time in my life, but it is hard not to listen to and get distracted by the process.

Lovely cover, guys. The accordion and slide guitar surround me. That's JP on accordion? Not some BIAB player? It sounds wonderful. The vocal inflections are classic. I like the gritty bass tone too.

I agree with what Steve and Ted said....they've covered my similar thoughts well. You certainly have you own style which is a compliment. With all the saturation of music these days it's hard to have a style that's different but after listening to several of your songs you are in a space of your own with your words, vocals and music. I like that and this song!

I'm on my fourth listen and I find no fault with the acoustic guitars plugged in tone at all. The words are very thoughtful without the need for rhyming. My favorite lines are "I wanted to Disneyfy the Project
I wanted to tickle those Florida keys." I like how you doubled the vocal on the last two lines on each verse (Chorus). Good vocals and melody Steve! I wish you well with your health issues and hope for a successful outcome. Getting old sux for sure.

Well done Tim! This is the only version I've heard of this song and it's beautifully done. The guitars sound so soft and full...they fill the background space nicely. The mellow lead solo is a perfect fit for the music. You sing this very good and the backing harmonies/vocals are cool.
