You Don't Know What You're Talking About
© 1994, 2010 Ted Johnson, Ron Besore
Recorder: Started on a BR 600; finished on a Micro BR
Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Piano, Voice: Ted
Guitar: Dave Stack
Drums: Micro BR, STD2
Guitars: Epiphone Les Paul, Yamaha Acoustic
Bass: Michael Kelly acoustic
Piano: Yamaha Clavinova
This was co-written with Ronwhistle (the same as
School Bus (https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=9269.0)). It's been on the shelf a long time. Never recorded until now.
My friend Dave bought a BR 600 and wanted me to help him figure it out. I chose this song to be our experiment. We weren't done before Dave had to go back home, so I exported the tracks and I finished on the MBR.
WOW another Ted post !! This must be good !
And it is !!! Catchy and clever.
Cool riffs, fab arrangement.
Great performance !!
Fantastic tune !!
Please tell me that you used a piano for that piano sounds !! ;D
Oh! Catchy for sure! ;D Great tune, Ted, and clever lyrics.
Lotsa good lines but I especially like this imagery:
You may have the gift of gab,
But when you speak I see that ten-year-old
Playground pontificator
Menacing me with a maple leaf,
Head too big for his baby teeth.
Well done all round. ;)
Donna
Superb, Ted :)
Geir, unless he's neglected to mention a piano in the blurb, I think that piano's the acoustic guitar... :o, I want that sound! :D (it's a really good hook by the way :)...)
EDIT: And the lyrics... just... wow! :)
Dang Ted, fantastic song. For such an off the cuff song, this one really soars, great recording here. I am sure your friend is hooked now, to have a song as strong as this in one session is incredible. You guys should get together more often, there is a real good feel here, it breathes and grooves.
Oops. I forgot to mention the piano in the info area. I updated it. I wish I had a cheap toy piano. That's the sound I really wanted to hear in there.
@Donna: Most of these lyrics are 15 years old, but that line about "Menacing me with a maple leaf" is a new tweak. I must admit I was pretty satisfied with that one. I sometimes forget how effective a simple image can be. I didn't mean it literally, but now I can't help but imagine a blustering punk kid waving a maple leaf in my face as though it were a detonator.
BTW: Dave lurks. But I don't think he has an account. Hi Dave! He and I need to figure out how to swap files for collaboration. I'm sure we can figure it out.
Catchy groove goin and cooL lyrics Ted !! Nice production and performances by you both!
Great stuff Ted, hugely infectious piano and guitar riffs that play so well off each other. Love the bass as well and the whole thing is quirky, catchy and really inventive. Agree with Donna, some very cool lyrics in there and overall this is another fabulous track from Ted (and Dave). Hope we get some more like this soon.....
Cheers,
Nigel
This is mighty, Ted. 8)
Huge production, and a story with universal appeal - this will be getting more play from me.
Awesome song! I listened this first time in the morning. This second listening 'opened' it more to me! A lots of nice flavors all around, like that piano riff and the lead guitar on the chorus. Nice collab, Ted and Dave!
Kari
It's cold and lonely on page two, so...
Thanks everybody!
It's kind of funny that this song had very few tracks (6), even though I had more tracks available to me on the BR 600. I think I prefer the Micro BR to the BR 600.

I'm kind of glad I never got around to recording it until now. My original bass ideas were very very busy, and I was rather attached to them. Dave suggested a slow descending bass part, and that tweaked the character of the entire song (for the better, I think).

You mean I'm not the only one whose life has been peppered with encounters with bullshit artists?

It's kind of growing on me too.
I hope to get Dave on some more songs here. Can we start a chant?
Dave... Dave... Dave... Dave... Dave... Dave... Dave...
Well, I DO know what I'm talking about...When I say that

Mighty fine. Highly accomplished musically, with great depth and originality on the lyric. Kind of quirky but totally cool. It makes you want to press the play button again as soon as it finishes. So that's what I'm doing now... !
Yep... still fab on play 2 and getting fabber. The piano hook is really dragging me in.
cool and catchy groove...very danceable. Digging the lyrics and vocals.
Cool catchy tune Ted. It`s definitely something i just had to keep listening to over and over.
The intro with the piano driving into the bass and guitars is perfect. That`s what i`m talking about.
Where you get the idea for the lyrics. Those 10 year Canadian kids can be bullies eh? :D
This is a Super cool vibe here Ted bro!
I'm in love with the part that starts "You may have the gift of gab....."
SWeeet vibe going on there!
This tune is a keeper!!!

This song excels in so many ways, and is full of catchy hooks that just draw you in.
Glad you got this one recorded, its a gem.
I just put this on Soundclick.Thank you LG. Glad you liked it.
Bluesberry and Geir: Dave has heard your chanting. Any day now he'll create an account. Really.
Greeny: Thanks for the back-to-back listens. Quirky is a compliment. This song was experimental in a couple of ways. I wanted to write a song where the verse and chorus secretly have the same chord pattern, and only the piano hook gives the secret away.

I don't remember for sure. It was a long time ago. Ron and I were probably talking about our experiences with the great bullshit artists of our lives. The three verses are based on real events.

Those high harmonies are from my Digitech Vocalist Live 2. For some reason that part reminds me of Journey. [Shivers...]

Thanks. That guitar hook by Ron was the key to making the song. A good hook is a gift not to be wasted.
Great stuff!! As always, a top tune with super organic production and values. I really dig your shit, Ted. Like a farmer, or something.

Like this a lot, can't believe it's taken me so long to respond. Very clever lyrics and the timing is great, in fact it's all top notch.............Willie

I had to find the song on YouTube. I didn't hear the similarity at first, but you're right. It's the exact same chord sequence, only half as fast as mine.
Theirs: ||: G - F- | C - G - :||
Mine: ||: GFCG :||That's a good ear you've got! You could totally do a remix version of my song using samples from
Volunteers in America. (You don't have a problem with samples and looping, do you?)
Thank you too, Willie and Henwrench.
I downloaded the song a while ago but only listened to it yesterday in bed. I think my mp3 player was set to shuffle mode ... I had listened to a couple of songs that I thought were nice and was about to fall asleep, but then your song started, and I had to stay awake. :)
In other words: Great song, great performance!
Regards,
Steffen
Thanks Steffen.
I was reminded yesterday that there was a first attempt to record this about three years ago. I didn't remember it getting very far. But my friend reminded me that there was a saxophone part, and he doesn't think the song sounds right without it. So I sent him a bunch of WAVs, and he says he's going to remix it, and redo the sax. So there may be a new version of this song eventually with a couple more hands on it.
Musically outstanding. That's my favorite aspect of your songs Ted. You've got the gift of making a catchy ass tune. I'm not a lyricist, and when putting a song together, I'd be perfectly happy making instrumentals for the rest of my life. With that said, take this with a grain of salt: I felt like I was outside the bubble on an inside joke. There were clever and entertaining lyrics for sure, but I didn't quite get it.
Again, the music is absolutely fantastic. I'd place your ability to construct a song up there with henwrench. It's not that there is something special about your music, each part is special and unique. I find that remarkable.

Here's how I explained the lyrics on my blog:
"Learning the art of bullshit detection requires contact with bullshit artists. This is a tribute to those who honed our skills."
Don't try to promote me to the Henwrench league. I don't deserve it. And besides, I'd be scared with his pointing that guitar in my face all the time.

This does remind me of school bus, but only after you mentioned it. I'm liking the groove, the drive.. okay I'm liking the rhythm on this one. Nicely done.
Masterbump.
I forgot how much fun this one was.
how in the name of the wee man did i miss this one, magic ted and a fine masterbump, better than flash harry's new toothbrush.
Well I'll be dipped in elephant shit - Crafty tune!! Hooky and intelligent with a clean production. I especially enjoyed the catchy chorus and the mix of the harmony vox.
I wish I had picked this up back in Jan. An excellent tune!
