I have to admit that I was never a huge Zappa fan. Although I loved the weird genius of his music I couldn't listen to too much at a time so I wasn't going to submit anything for the fest - then I remembered this one. I don't own any Zappa CDs (I've got some on vinyl but no deck anymore) so I put the basic piano down from memory. When I checked on youtube for the lyrics I see that I've got some of the chords a bit wrong - or "different" at least. I couldn't be bothered to start again and maybe it works....
The other thing is that I can't sing. I've been recording my music for many years but have never before recorded me warbling - and you will hear why. It was quite fun to do though.
And don't worry - the torture stops after about 5 minutes.
This is wickedly cool and your vocals suit it very well. Great job...love the screams and all the subtleties coming out of your synth...Your voice reminds me of The Jazz Butcher aka Pat Fish.
Really cool recording!! I don't know this FZ tune, but all the cool sound effects and instruments sound great along with the rest of the keyboard work and singing ~ very cool!
Great cover of a great song!!!
This is a great cover. Your vox fits this song well,
You did a very good job, I'd say.
Mp3 player bound.....

Hi Chapperz,
You know the tone of your voice is cool..
Those screams are magic and creased me up..
"The tickling never stops"
..Don't work too hard...
Nick
Hey ... where's my comment ???
LUV This version !!! Quite different from the original, yet you've managed to get a lot of the breaks and bridges very true to Zappa.
Magic !
Cheers guys!
It was great fun to do - but I'm guessing that you can understand why I don't sing too often. I'll stick to what I'm passable at.
Paul
...you have my vote...
I'm prone to 'Hot Rats"
ooooaaaayyyyy
Nick
I don't know the original track but I like this some great little keyboard breaks and a bit Jethro Tullish in places - i like your voice I think it suits the track.
Keep on singing, brother! This is high class stuff!
Only thing I would recommend is to bring the vocal up so it stands out a bit more in the mix. A mere technical point. The song is superb.
Gene
Thanks for the kind words Gene. I deliberately left the "vocals" a bit down in the mix as I don't really see singing as my main strength. It was a very enjoyable bit of fun though.....
Paul
I completely missed this! The production is great, but you should know that already. The voice is great too since it brings a relaxed feeling to the song as a contrast to the lyrics... I could imagine a reggae version of the song with ukuleles and steeldrums...
Never heard the original as i was never a real big Zappa fan either and own none of his work. What i do hear here though is alot of talent. This is quite a long ways from your guitar driven songs and a VERY hard tune to pull off. I think you did an amazingly good job on this tune with a million changes. Bravo!
I'll own up and say this is the only Zappa song i've listened to , out of the whole fest , and it's excellent Chapperz , please sing more , not less , but no more Zappa , 10/10
Rob
Wicked cool track, Paul!! I love the original approach, and I think the vocals are awesome.
Those screeches!! Nice! Man, you did a great job with this!
Mark
A small addition to this fine song. I like this one. Chappie, nice job.
Gene
Nice addition Gene. I was going to put some guitar on it but ran out of time. No need now! Well done and thanks.
Mark - I have to confess the screeches were a sample in my Roland Fantom. I found this patch and it was one of the reasons I decided to have a bash at this tune. The other reason is that it was one of the few songs I felt I might be able to sing. I think it almost suits a English accent.
Paul
fantastic piece of music, I can't believe I missed it before. I found it on a random search today.
I love it.
Hi paul.
..always thought you had an English, proper like accent:))
You capture the tone and the spirit of the song:))
Nick
Just listening to the Zappa fest and must say i thought this was excellent
