I don't mean to offend anyone by this. I just think it's a killer minimalistic song with a great bass riff.
Dumb All Over
Words/music: Frank Zappa
Performed by Geir,
Ibanez GSR200 bass
Ïbanez UV-777 7-string guitar (rhythm & solo)
mbr mic, drums and FX
had too shrink it to 128kbs
Zappa don't offend, he is the thinking mans rocker, it is supposed to be satire and all that. Flipping heck Geir, this sounds fantastic. I gotta get busy and start on a Zappa myself. I love it.
I`m feeling dumb all over trying to comprehend how you are putting these out so quick.
You`ve had them on a shelf for a while haven`t you? ;D
I`m trying to look for the original. What Album is this on again?
Doesn`t matter! You blow me away. Yours is most likely better. Love how bassy this is.
Your voice is extremely sensational.
Oh AND we`re not worthy! ;)
I can't wait to hear this in my truck. and yes that means PIEPOD material. Awesome!
Oh, and I want the big version, so you know what to do.
man you are on fire of late geir
Wow, an incredible representation, bro!
I used to listen to a program a long while back on my fav rock station, and they had a Dead and a Zappa program every week. Ha, Yellow Snow was played every time, but there were some good gems they threw in, this being included!
I do love the groove to this - Ya Hozna was another one I put on a lot.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!

"Geir plays Zappa"
It would be a great album indeed, you're perfect with this kind of music!
As I said before, I'll end up liking zappa. However, IMHO the panning effect is a sonic-nuclear-bomb.
In the chorus would be perfect, through all the song is a bit disturbing! Neverthless, good job!
BTW will you leave any of Zappa's songs for us to cover?
Just keep 'em coming Geir!
You are on FIRE!!!!!
LG
I gotta admit - I'm not a big Zappa fan. :(
That being said - I still enjoyed listening to this over a bowl of chili at lunch today.
Great post Geir! You're a machine man! I don't know how you do it ???

With Zappa, your goal should be to offend
everyone. FZ was an equal opportunity offender by design.
Geir, your skills as a producer are really shining in the ZappaFest--as if your skills as a musician and singer weren't already offenstastic.
I'm a sucker for a good groove repeated way more times than an insecure composer would ever attempt. This really shows your confidence is justified.
A shameless self-bump, under the excuse of answering a few questions ::)

I kinda like how the bass turned out too. I doubletracked the bass, but only played a minute or two on each track (that riff is a pain to play for 6 minutes) and looped the tracks. (different lenght of the loops to "hide" where the splices are). A trick I've used on guitar a couple of times too, when I haven't had time to record the whole song twice.

That was intentional. I actually used 7 tracks to get that effect (I think). I recorded the vocals without any effect, then did one bounce with autopanning and chorus to a stereo track, then I did another bounce applying autopanning with a different speed than the first on + a dash of flanger. The four tracks was then bounced to a new stereo-track to get mixed with the music.

there's more than enough for all of us ;D .... I still have a couple I'd like to do at some point tho ;)
Somehow I missed this (not familiar with Zappa), but I like your take on it!

Ah, now this is a trick I will try to remember in the future. 8)
Apologies for missing this the first time around. In a word: killer. Are you chording a bass for the main riff, or is it only double-tracked as stated? Hurts my fingers and wrist just listening to it. Drums sound damn fine as well.
The panning is freaking me out. Fits the song perfectly.
Nice.

There was some chording in the main riff indeed and some hammer-ons as far as I can remember. I used at least an hour trying to figure out how to play it, but I think I'm pretty close. And I feel sorry for Scott Thunes having to do this live night after night ....
