OK, so I am in France today and it is 35 minutes past midnight here. So here's Hellbound, a take on my bass/drums backer with some incredible Satched up guitar by Tommy. Tommy jammed along to this backer and created some atmospheric and spooky stuff - I was expecting a heavy rocker from him but I got something quite diferent. I was going to do some lyrics based on the Hellraiser movie but when I heard Tommy's guitar it took me in a completely different direction. So now we present Hellbound, a tale of passion, obsession, madness and death.
I hope the mix is ok - this was done very roughly while I was on a plane today and I only have my mp3 earphones, so I have not been able to check the mix on my Sennheisers. Also, for me this is a very quick song - I would have liked to spend more time on the vox tracks but I just did a couple of takes and kept the best one. So it's a bit rough in places.
If you want to be frightened, here's the lyrics:
The devil's in the cornfield
Clutching at our hearts
Standing in the shadows
Watching as we pass
Angels and demons dance in your eyes
One night of love for a life full of lies
Obsession is a passion that's becoming our drug
As we rip out the pumping heart of love
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
Pleasure turns to pain
As despair fills the night
Blood stains the ground
The darkness is alight
Angels and demons dance in my brain
Madness consumes me in its flames
Whispered imaginings that tear me apart
Are just the sounds of my tell-tale heart
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
You're dragging me down
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
We're going Hellbound
Hellbound
You're dragging me downTommy's guitar is just mind numbing on this.
Looking forward to more Rockfest stuff. Please don't think me rude if I don't comment much, I am away on a business trip and will only have a few minutes here and there to listen to stuff if I am lucky. But I will comment when I am back in the UK later at the end of the week.
Cheers,
Nigel
What a good song!! The chorus really took me by surprise, loved the way the tempo slowed for it, totally unexpected in a good way.
Your vocal was great Nigel, would love to hear it a little higher in the mix.
The composition and playing of this song is top class!!
Flippin CooL mix Nigel - your vocals sound great !!!
Happy Halloween and Happy Rockfest to ya !!!

Tommy, my jaw just keeps hitting the floor every time I hear your guitar runs with the spooky stuff in the background. Happy Halloween!
Anrdew, thanks for the kind words. I may remix this when I am back home as the vox sound quite high in my ear buds (which are all I have to mix with at present).
Cheers,
Nigel
Yes!!! That was mindblowing stuff, guys!!
Nigel - It was a killer backer as is, but the vocals really made this one - Maybe higher in the mix like AndrewH said, but it's tough to call because I like them nestled like that. It gives you more room to scream!!! >:D
Satch - Truly deadly guitar work as usual. What can I say, I'm a fan!!!
Sweeeeeeeeeeeet job guys!!!
Mark
Just a truly excellent track vox are just the buisness and the guitar is to die for, just top quailty
Yes sir this is what I was waiting for, super stuff. I need more vocals from you Nigel, your vocals are excellent, I love this one big time. More Nigel, more. And lets give it up for satch on guitars. This is too much, really good guys.
I love this one !!! Vox is just brilliant and Tommy's guitar works so great, rythm guitar transformed the backer and the lead Satched it up !!
Great collab !!
Great performance all round guys!

WoW! This is wild! Nice job on the vox Nigel and Satch your guitar is freakin' insane! I knew you could shred but...whoa! Loved the change up and the overall arrangement. This is very well done all around. Cool!
LOL This was just excellent. Don't hear you sing enough Nigel!!!. And Satch what can one say. You can rip on slow songs. LOL You both were magnificent.
Wow! A scary rock song and performing was excellent! Incredible good guitar work, Tommy! Fine job guys!

:o Speechless!!!! ( Nearly) This could be on ANY radio station that plays rock!!! And should be.
Thank you all for the kind comments - I really enjoyed adding the rhythm and solo work to this awesome backing track by Ferryman !!! His vocals really make it great for this spooky season !!!
You too can use his backer and/or Geir's version and create a masterpiece:

thats a hell yeah bound!
Thanks for the positive feedback and particularly the comments on the vox. I probably need to practice singing more but this did come together quite well, especially the chorus part. It's encouraging to hear that it works.
Mixing vox is a bit tough - I don't like them too high as I don't want the instruments to get dominated, especially the bass. I aim for "nestled" (I like Mark's description) but I realise that the vocals may sound "louder" to me because I know the lyrics, so I could be tempted to push them a bit too far back. I'll listen on different gear when I am back in the UK and may remix.
Thanks again for the feedback. 48 pushed us to do something different with yet another great "Fest".
Cheers,
Nigel
I'm sure I commented on this.....
I must have been too stunned to type......
Awesome collab!
Peace

wow i missed this one nigel, great to hear you letting your pipes loose, your vox reminds me of ian mcculloch from echo and the bunnymen.
the lyrics are really cool, i like that they arenot specific about anything and are open to the listeners interpretation.
this lstener hopes you aren't working too hard in your day job, maybe i get that from the lyrics cos i'm working to hard in my day job. lol
Thanks Jim, I am indeed working far too hard but I am lucky to be employed so I ain't complaining. I do like my job as well but they have pushed us hard this year.
Glad you liked the lyrics - I normally find these hard to do but Tommy's guitar just inspired some trains of thought that led to the lyrics. It's mainly about obsession and death, strange how shredding can take you down those paths.....
Cheers,
Nigel
This song rocked Hard!!!
Great Collab!!

his guitar work has had the same effect on me , time travel was a train of thought he sent me down lol and it turned out fine.
This is one awesome collab guys!
My only nitpic would be to boost up your vox a bit.
I love it ... straight to the mp3 player.

The bar just keeps going up and up...Or I'm getting shorter.
Bloody Brilliant Nigel, the vox and the backing are awesome........Alex
I just had another listen to this and I had my speakers up high and didn't know it. Made me about jump out of my chair. Holy Crap what a start!!
This is quite heavey stuff. As already said the vox must be a bit higher in the mix. I must truely admit this is not really my cup of tea but the song is made by good musicians.
What I love on this forum is the will to collab. Together with results like these I´d say 2 thumbs up !!
Thanks again everyone for the feedback. I'm agreeing that the vox are a bit low. I did a quick mix using ear buds on a plane trip to make the Rockfest deadline, so didn't test on different playback equipment. So they sound OK on some gear but a bit low on others, so overall they need a push up. I'm going to redo some of the lead vox and remix it in a better environment!
Agree with Covermark about the power of the collab here. I'd never have believed I would be able to produce this kind of music before I came here and was able to hook up with other musicians that really inspire you to go in different directions.
Cheers,
Nigel
This isn't a bump, as it's the first time I've heard it! Some incredible Satch-shred, and then that cool, half-speed staccato of the chorus. Still getting the Psychedelic Furs from Nigel's vocals! A very superior collaboration, and way too much to take in on one listen. Nice bit of slap(?!) bass at the end there too. Great job you two...this really works.
The old SCC thread is throwing up some absolute beauties...
