Title: "A Million Miles High" by The Stan Laurels
Post by: Bosko Schwartz on September 03, 2009, 04:31:34 PM
Hello All,

First, I apologize that I have been absent lately.  I have missed the Forum quite a bit.  Even though I am still a relatively new member compared to some, there was a solid 4 or 5 months straight that I spent more time on the Forum than I did working the day-job. ;D

Here we have my most simple song by The Stan Laurels.  Even more simple than "LoveBirds."  I think in this case, less is in fact more.  I hope so, anyway.  There is pretty much zero prog influence here, and I managed to keep it down to just over 3 minutes long.  It doesn't have a standard structure (I believe only one part repeats in the entire song), so in that respect, it's pretty Boskonian.  It's a sweet little love song written for my wife, and anyone who roams in the vicinity of the 1600 board over the next couple of days will actually get to hear it before even she does. :o  I will be giving it to her this weekend for her birthday.

Pinedog will like the fact that the vox are WAY UP FRONT.  You can probably even figure out the words!  Holy shit! ;D

The mix is not final, and I will probably be adding some sort of keyboards and more guitars, but now it just has one acoustic guitar (double-tracked), bass, drums, and lots of vox.  That's right, I said ONE guitar and ZERO keys.  What is the world coming to??? ;D

Hope you enjoy this one.  It's a bit on the mushy/sappy side, but once in a while we need a little pop. ;D

NOTE: Changed the title to "A Million Miles High" due to some random movie released in 2005 entitled "Bigger than the Sky."

I would worry that added keys would smooth out the endearing jauntiness of the tune.

Oh, what a killer drum fill I just heard!  Must rewind.

Anyway, as I was saying, it's great the way it is.  Wonderful background vocals.

Would like to hear the bass a bit thicker.  I'm not getting a lot of bottom end on this one (There's a one-liner in there somewhere).

Another Bosktastic tune.

Your wife will be pleased.  People tell me it's all about points.

Gaaaaaa... This is so good!  Yes, it's simple as compared to other Stan Laurel songs but nothing simple about the inventiveness going on here with the bouncy rhythems, and the tasty melody lines and harmonies.  And instantly recognizable as Bosko and the Stan Laurels.  You have really crafted a personally unique style in your music and continue to hold up a high standard.
Dern ya..... :D

Nothing wrong with pop, kid. I'll have to admit I need my dose on occasion. Just don't tell anybody...

I love those drums - I sold my kit last year, and am dying to get another one soon. I grow sicker of the BR Rhythm section every time I hear one of your songs.

Fine job as always, and the vocals were superb. Right out front, Pinedog is gonna love it!!

It sounds like a Brian Wilson masterpiece to me, just freaking incredible, or maybe another from his brother Dennis Wilson's incredible album "Pacific Ocean Blue". The bass and drums sound really good.

It's a bit mushy and sappy, but it's lovely for it. Simple and effective, nice airy recording and still uniquely Bosko. Altho it's simple in its arrangement, the song structure isn't, which keeps it interesting. The vox are lovely, and nice and upfront - that works for a poppy song. Hope she likes it!

I'd be tempted to boost the bottom end a little, especially on the bass, but nothing that detracts seriously from the song.

Cheers,

Nigel

Thanks, Bloob! ;D  I am still toying around with the possibility of keys.  We'll see.  As for the bass, you're right, and that is because I rolled off the low EQ like I often do to keep it from being overbearingly boomy, but it didn't work this time because for the most part I was playing higher notes.  For example, the beginning "solo" part is done on the highest frets and strings of the bass.  Anyway, I fixed the bottom end and gave my wife a better mix (not that she even noticed the bass ;D).  Thanks again for the kind words!

Wow, thanks, Ken! ;D  I have to say that YOU in particular were an influence on this song.  Mostly in the fact that I wanted to get the production clean, crisp, and clear.  I am not nearly as good on guitar as you, so the simple strumming helped me not have to worry about mistakes, and made it easy to mix.  I think the fact that I have a lot less instruments than usual helped too.  I also used less effects on the vox and put them more out front for more of an attempt at a Hooper-ish sound.  Your music has definitely been a major inspiration for me to strive toward the perfection I will probably never achieve but you seem to nail with every recording. :o  I also owe facemask, as his simple, poppy little love song that he posted a while back really inspired me!

Thanks, cuthbert! ;D  I guess drums are what I am best at (I wouldn't have the balls to even call myself a guitarist or keyboardist), although I play drums the least.  For instance, I hadn't played drums at all for probably a year -- literally -- before sitting down to record this.  Definitely took me a few play-throughs before I got it down, even though it's a pretty simple performance. :)

PS: Where do you post your tunes?  You have really good taste (you referenced Elephant 6 a while back), so I'd love to hear your stuff.

Thanks Bosko - I appreciate your interest! :)

My day-job has been taking up much of my time lately, and I haven't posted a lot here yet - so far, mostly a few snippets in the Song Intros thread and a minor contribution to one of Greeny's tunes. I do have several irons in the fire on my MicroBR in various stages of completeness and a little more time for the next few weeks, so I do hope to finish and make some new postings here soon.

Hey, Beatles remasters coming out tomorrow! And there goes my leisure time the remainder of this week! ;)

btw, still very much looking forward to your CD release - please let me know when it's available.  8)

All the best,
cuthbert

How did I miss this.

This is damn good! It definitely has your feel, but not as "processed" sounding. And I don't mean processed in a bad way. It just feels a bit more... natural. If that makes any sense. Great intro too. And I love the bass! Great job!

I need to get my guitars put back to together and get cracking on some stuff. You really inspire me to do more. My wife thinks that's funny because I play a completely different kind of music. I think she is just now realizing how varied my musical tastes are.

Keep up the good work. This song need to go on your second album for sure! ;)

John, sorry it took me so damn long to comment on this one, as you may remember I had family in town, and sometimes they can be a f*@%ing handful...... yes, this was one of those times.

sigh....

As for the song....WOW! I freaking love it!!! At first listen I thought the vocals were too up front, but after numerous listens I think it works quite well. I'm also glad you agreed with Blooby and Nigel's comments on boosting the bass a bit; the bassline is incredible and most definitely needs a bit of the spot light. I especially love the change at the 1:32 mark and the bass slide, it's brilliant, but I kind of felt like you should have repeated that same slide at the 1:42 mark before the chorus came back, but perhaps that didn't work as well with the subsequent change? But what do I know. Man, you have a knack for writing a very catchy song.... "too poppy for even me" never! I like my pop!

The one thing that really stood out for me was your drumming....shit-fuck, it's so spot on with the song; complex, but not overwhelming, powerful, but well-balanced with the other instruments.

Again, incredible work!!!! You should maybe make this a bonus track for your album, or a b-side. But I guess it doesn't tie into the theme.

Either way, Your wife is a lucky woman.
