Title: "Clarity" - an original song about perspective
Post by: Rickocaster on August 25, 2009, 01:35:51 PM
Again, sorry about posting this as a link instead of an mp3.   ::) Country isn't usually my thing, but somehow that's what came out on this song. Here's the background as I posted it on YouTube in case you're interested on what inspired this song.  I hope it doesn't appear preachy - I'm just being honest about my own experience. All comments are appreciated.

Many years ago, my wife came home from the grocery store in tears after an old lady made a derogatory comment about our baby with special needs. It was all I could take. After I consoled her, I strapped on my running shoes and headed out the front door. As my feet pounded the sidewalk, I began to ask God, "Why us?". On top of all our other difficulties, why did we have to put up with such ridicule? The wisdom came as clearly as the wind whistling through my ears. Why NOT us? What made us so special that we could claim immunity from pain that paled in comparison to that suffered by others? God loves them, too. He never promised to keep us from pain; He promised to get us through it. Are you going through a tough time right now? These bible verses have helped me: Philippians 4:12-13, Romans 8:28, and John 3:16. I'm just sharing my own experience with you, and I hope it helps.

Rick

PS - I recorded this on my BR600 with a Takamine F360 acoustic, and American Standard Strat, and an SX Bass. And as usual, please pardon the vocals, I don't claim to be a real singer.

Really cool tune. It put me in mind of Johnny Horton, and it even includes a history lesson.

Thanks. Johnny Cash was one of my heros growing up, and I think that influenced me a little.

Since I mentioned Johnny Horton, I looked him up on wikipedia. Horton and Cash were close friends!

Good song!

Being honest about your own experience and perspective is a great place to start a song.  Not preachy at all--you're not telling the listener what to believe.

You got this atheist to listen twice, so consider the song a success!

Thanks for the kind words and I appreciate your willingness to listen to a different perspective. This is such a great forum to share ideas - musical and otherwise.

This is recorded exceptionally well.  While you say country isn't your thing, your voice is well suited to this.

Pretty deep for a country ditty.

Well done.

Appreciate the comments!  I actually wrote most of those lyrics sitting in my car in a grocery store parking lot about 20 years ago. The biblical concepts they're based on have continued to be a comfort to me all these years later.

The original music was getting out dated, so I decided to do the old-school country thing. A couple of folks have said I have an Elvis style on this song (Love Me Tender ???), but that wasn't intentional. I guess it's my Southern boy roots growing close to the surface.

Thanks guys!
