Title: Top 5 Albums of All Time
Post by: Bosko Schwartz on July 22, 2009, 07:01:10 AM
I know, I know, it's a ridiculous premise for us, who love so many different bands and styles of music, to try and narrow it down to 5.  I know our lists will change sometimes on a daily -- maybe even hourly basis.  But F  it, let's do it anyway.

Rules: No two albums by the same band (otherwise, my entire Top 5 would be Beatles).  No "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits" compilations.  Any genre, any time period.  Can be in random or true order.  No mulling it over -- this is meant to be really spontaneous for maximum honesty.  No coming back and altering lists later.

I'll start (random order for me):

These things do change with the weather, but there are some clear favourites of mine...

- 'Transformer' - Lou Reed
- 'Dark Side of the Moon' - Pink Floyd
- 'Hounds of Love' - Kate Bush
- 'Revolver' - The Beatles
- 'Harvest' - Neil Young

But how can I leave out:

- 'Tin Drum' - Japan
- 'Penthouse and Pavement' - Heaven 17
- 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake' - Small Faces

Oh! This is hard!!!!!!

Alright I'll play this crazy, impossible game:  I deliberately leave out Beatles because it will get picked to death probably (would have been Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour though).  Here is a list of 5 that I listen to constantly to this day.

*  'Tommy' - The Who
*  'Blood on the Tracks' - Bob Dylan
*  'Aja' - Steely Dan
*  'American Beauty' - Grateful Dead

Thank God, I thought I had somewhat of a weak list IV being my only strong candidate. I bought that tape 3 different times and wore it out.

Cheater! ;D

If I had an extra 3, I'd probably go with Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy, The Anniversary - Your Majesty, and The Kinks - Kinda Kinks (although their entire output between 1964 - 1967 is amazing.

Sheesh, I just broke my own rule! :-\
Title: Two Top-5 Lists: Geek vs. Gut
Post by: Ted on July 22, 2009, 01:52:58 PM
Some of you may have noticed that I can geek out from time to time.  Well, I obsessively rate all of my songs in iTunes. (It helps with my "Smart Playlists" okay?)  I've rated more than 8300 songs.

More than a year ago, I decided to dump all of my song ratings into a database and find out what my favorite albums were based on the ratings.

Based on ratings of individual songs my analysis showed these as my top five albums:

(1) “Raw Power” by Iggy and the Stooges
(2) “Brutal Youth” by Elvis Costello
(3) "Oyster" by Heather Nova
(4) "So" by Peter Gabriel
(5) "Scatterlings" by Juluka

The results surprised even me. (What!? Nothing by The Who?  How did Heather Nova get in there!?).

If I were instead to make a list from the gut, it might look more like this:

(1) “Quadrophenia" by The Who
(2) "Trust" Elvis Costello and the Attractions
(3) "Never Mind The Bollocks" by The Sex Pistols
(4) "Red" by King Crimson
(5) "Hope" by Klaatu

Heavily weighted by sentimentality.

Hooper, thanks for the strong compliment!  I'm so happy you ordered this album! ;D  You will not be disappointed with this purchase; I guarantee it 200%.  If you dig it, make sure to get their next two albums as well, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War with the Mystics.  What a trilogy!  These are the last three albums they have put out, and they have been around since the mid-80s.  One of the reasons I love them so much is because they seem to defy time.  Most bands start out great and then slowly get worse and worse.  This bands gets better and better, in my opinion.  Truly inspiring!

The three I mentioned to Hooper are the best, IMHO, although the early stuff is good and raw.  The newer stuff is just majestic and incredible, but with the same weird vibe as the early stuff.

'Transformer' is first on the list for me, and has been for many years. It's pretty much a Bowie album as well as a Lou Reed one, lol. And Mick Ronson is one hell of a guitar player. Those songs are just so eclectic and timeless.

I'm glad someone else likes it!

'Odelay' by Beck should be somewhere on my list too. And 'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. And 'Bryter Later' by Nick Drake... christ, there really is no end when you start thinking about it... lol

Alison is one of my fave songs and I nearly recorded a cover a couple of weeks back just for a quick bit of fun. I saw Costello do this without the Attractions on some TV show in about 1979, just him and his guitar and I prefer it that way, less jazzy. But I've got busy with other stuff and new toys and am working on "White Rabbit" for Woodstock. Perhaps one day. It's one of the two songs I can actually play all the way through on the guitar (the other being Ziggy Stardust).

Back on topic. Here's my top 5:

Psychedelic Furs - The Psychedelic Furs
Roxy Music - Roxy Music
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
Iggy Pop - The Idiot

That reminds me, my band used to do a manic cover of "Mass Production". Must record that one day.

Cheers,

Nigel

It's the minor seventh I have a problem with... I know all the chords except for F#m7... I think it's a bar chord, and I'm not great at those. Damn, this is showing me up for the beginner that I really am!!!!

I think Alison is a great song, but I've always preferred Linda Ronstadt's cover from her 1978 "Living in the U.S.A." album.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAHktlvoZEE

I bought that album long before I ever heard the Elvis Costello original. I find that I almost always prefer the first version of a song that I hear, regardless of whether it's the original or a cover. Usually, I'll hear the original first and it will be my favourite. But, in a few instances such as this, I'll get familiar with the cover before hearing the original, and I almost always prefer the cover. Is it just me or does everyone tend to prefer the first version they hear, even if it's a cover?

I think it depends on the quality of the cover - there are so many throwaway, lazy covers around these days (I say lazy, because it's clear they're released knowing the 'kids' will have no idea it's a cover...).

I have to say I really liked No Doubt's cover of 'It's My Life', even though I'd known and loved the Talk Talk original for many years.

And although I knew the Roxy version of Jealous Guy before I heard the original Lennon version, Lennon wins hands down.

So I can't give a definitive answer... lol

That's the way I play it. Well I try to.

Beginner my ass.  You're a natural player, not a schmoe like me who knows just enough theory to keep my heart from connecting directly with my hands.

To make a minor barre chord into a minor seventh, just lift your pinkie.

Here are the chords:
   Abm7    Abm    B7sus4  B7sus
E --4--   --4--   --2--   --2--
B --4--   --4--   --5--   --5--
G --4--   --4--   --2--   --4--
D --4--   --6--   --4--   --4--
A --6--   --6--   --2--   --2--
E --4--   --4--   -----   -----

Now get busy.

Not always.  Greeny's version (https://songcrafters.org/community/post-your-work/hallelujah-just-me-and-my-telecaster/0/) is now my favorite version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, followed by Rufus Wainwright's version, followed by every other cover version I've heard (including Jeff Buckley's)--and last on the list is Leonard Cohen's original version.

Thanks for the Ronstadt version of Alison.  I haven't heard it in years, and (being a fan of the original EC version) it's not nearly as awful as I remembered it.  Not awful at all--but I could do without that buttery sax.

Those are barre chords, but EC tends not to play the bass strings (E and A), so he frets the B and high E strings with his index fingertip, rather than the laying his whole index finger across the fretboard.  I find it very unnatural.

A guitarist in Cameroon once tried to get me to play my barre chords like that, and got really frustrated that I couldn't do it.

There are a few exceptions for me. [Cake] covered "I will survive".
"I Will Survive" is a song first performed by Gloria Gaynor, released in October 1978. It was written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris.

I heard the original first, but like the cover better. On a side note, I also like a few of Kody's covers better than the original.

Actually, I think he's fretting the 5th and 6th strings with his thumb. I do that too. I find it easier and better sounding. The first two strings seem to ring clearer, giving it a brighter, almost 'open chord' quality. Some people have trouble fretting with their thumb but I find it quite natural. If you wrap your left hand around your right wrist and look at the fingers of your left hand, you'll find that they naturally form a major barre chord (except that the 2nd finger might have to come back a bit). The index finger is in the right position to cover the 1st and 2nd strings, and the thumb is in the right position to cover the 6th string. If you hold the neck of your guitar the same way, you can easily play major barre chords using your thumb to fret the 6th string (with a little practice). For minor barre chords, just lift your 2nd finger and extend the first finger barre to cover the first three strings. Actually, I usually barre the first three strings, even for major chords, so that I can easily switch between major and minor. For a minor 7th, lift the 2nd and 4th fingers and barre the first four strings with the first finger. It's easy once you get used to it.

That would be the Pete Townshend way of playing barre chords.  I find it hard to do myself.  This thread is becomming a very interesting discussion of some very great music.

Who used it first, Hendrix of Townshend?  The eternal question, If you ask Townshend he will say Hendrix copied a lot from him, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton...If you could ask Hendrix he would say those guys copied a lot from him?  I guess it ws a melting pot back in the boom days of 60s British Blues when these guys were all developing.  Maybe it came from Buddy Guy or someone like that?

I'm sure that guitarists were fretting with their thumbs long before Hendrix and Townshend came along. As I said earlier, it's a very natural way to hold the neck, so I think a lot of self-taught guitarists would have played that way. I just associate the technique with Hendrix because he was the first guitarist that I noticed fretting with his thumb. But I never assumed that he invented the technique.

Based on interviews I've read in magazines, Townshend strikes me as a very arrogant bugger with a chip on his shoulder. To hear him tell it, you'd think he invented every guitar technique known to man and everbody else stole his ideas. It's a load of rubbish. The only guitar technique Pete Townshend ever invented is the 'windmill'.

I've never thought of Pete Townshend as a great guitarist. He's a great songwriter and showman but his guitar playing is nothing special. Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of the Who (I have several albums and saw them in 1975). And I think some of Townshend's playing is very beautiful ("Behind Blue Eyes" comes to mind) but I don't think it's exceptional. If I was asked to list my top 100 favourite guitarists, I don't think Townshend would make the list. Yet, if I was asked to list my top 100 favourite bands, The Who would definitely be on it.

I was coming out of prog rock and listening to a combination of all of these albums plus a lot of Can so I guess that prepared me for the onset of punk. Scary Monsters is a huge fave as well but I think it's a bit patchy in places.

That's my feeling too.  Earlier in this topic, I provided the results of my "data analysis approach" to my favorite albums.  And the results surprised me.  (Nobody commented on it, which really hurt my feelings. ;))

Anyway, I never would have picked the five that came on top (https://songcrafters.org/community/general-discussion-b8/top-5-albums-of-all-time/msg39797/#msg39797)--even though they are all very good albums.  That was kind of my point.

What goes on in your head and heart is in constant flux.  The data can't capture that.

No one comments on a lot of the shit I post.  But I've learned to not take it personally.  I understand not everything is going to get a written reaction because everyone here has a life (except Greeny ... either that, or he's really a set of identical twins.  Or perhaps super-human.  No one has that much time. ;D).

That said ...

Quote from: Ted on July 22, 2009, 01:52:58 PMSome of you may have noticed that I can geek out from time to time.

(1) "Raw Power" by Iggy and the Stooges
(2) "Brutal Youth" by Elvis Costello
(3) "Oyster" by Heather Nova
(4) "So" by Peter Gabriel
(5) "Scatterlings" by Juluka

The results surprised even me. (What!? Nothing by The Who?  How did Heather Nova get in there!?).

If I were instead to make a list from the gut, it might look more like this:

(1) "Quadrophenia" by The Who
(2) "Trust" Elvis Costello and the Attractions
(3) "Never Mind The Bollocks" by The Sex Pistols
(4) "Red" by King Crimson
(5) "Hope" by Klaatu

Heavily weighted by sentimentality.

I did read your post earlier and found your approach and two different lists quite interesting.  I, too, enjoy rating songs on iTunes, but since I have HUNDREDS of albums, I decided one day that I will no longer rate anything below 4 stars.  Why bother rating 1- and 2-star songs?  Even 3 stars just means it's an average song in the user's opinion.  So now I only rate 4- and 5-star songs and put them in playlists -- one is a smart playlist with all of the 4- and 5-star songs, and another only includes 5-star songs, hand-picked.  I may just see what my top five albums are, based on my ratings, much like you did.  Only problem is, I haven't rated every single song yet, so it won't be comprehensive.

Anyway, I dig both of your lists, but the "heart" one is probably better in my opinion (and most likely more accurate for you).

As for the difficulty of this "challenge," that was entirely the point.  I'm a big Top 5/Top 10-list geek, and like to rate things even though I know it's an absurd premise.  I'm a huge fan of the movie/book High Fidelity.  I knew this topic would cause groans by some and excitement for others, and that even if they didn't want to do it, many would participate.  I also knew it would get some great conversations going.  So I'd call this thread a success. :)  Sure, I could have asked for a Top 20 list, but I honestly don't think it would have been any easier or less frustrating, and it would take 10 times longer. ;D

Quote from: Ted on July 25, 2009, 03:45:07 PMEarlier in this topic, I provided the results of my "data analysis approach" to my favorite albums.  And the results surprised me.  (Nobody commented on it, which really hurt my feelings. ;))

No one comments on a lot of the shit I post.  But I've learned to not take it personally.  I understand not everything is going to get a written reaction because everyone here has a life (except Greeny ... either that, or he's really a set of identical twins.  Or perhaps super-human.  No one has that much time. ;D).

I hope it was clear that I was being facetious there.  There isn't a facetious smiley, so I used the winking one.

Thanks for your comments.  And more thanks for starting this interesting topic.

Just as I geek out on my top-five albums, I also geek out on my smart playlists in iTunes.  I have an 8GB Nano, and 40GB of music, so I have an intricate system that rotates in a portion of my library every time I sync. One- and two-star songs never get rotated on. Three-star songs take an average of 17 months between plays.  Four- and five-star songs take an average of 10 months between plays.  Unrated songs stay on until I rate them.

That's just the beginning of the madness:  I have another playlist system that balances the ratio of music my wife likes to the music that only I like.  More wife-music when we're on a road trip together, less when I listen alone.

I am guessing the facetiousness was only somewhat true.  I can't speak for you, of course, but once in a while it does get to me when I thought I wrote something even somewhat interesting, intriguing, or funny, and it gets no response.  Maybe you have steel skin, but not me. :-\  In the case of your post, I was surprised no one responded either.  So I did.

You have some crazy playlists, there, sir.  But it sounds like they work well due to the 8GB Nano.  I have a 60GB iPod and it only contains about half of my music.  I have to slowly get rid of some things and try to fit on others, but it's hard.  Every time I try to go through the list and remove some, it's like pulling teeth.  My geekiness extends to the fact that not only must every song be a part of a complete album (I don't have just "songs" on my iPod), but within the artists, I always have to have all or at least most of their catalogue for a sense of completion.  Even if I don't listen to many of the albums, they have to be there.  I think it's some form of obsessive/compulsive disorder.  So it pretty much stays the way it is and I don't really listen to the other half of my music.  I wish I had the discipline to take your approach.  Good idea with the wife/non-wife smart playlists!

It takes balls, sir -- grargantuan, titanium balls -- to put a David Lee Roth album on an all-time Top 5 list. :o  I applaud your balls, sir.  How do you ride a bike?

There a many goog song on that album.
And the musician a world class, Stev Vai on guitar, Billy Sheehan on bassguitar
for example.

Listen to "Two fools a minute" great jazzy song.
Just listen to the album and maybe you know why I put it on the list.
But as you can see, the albums vary from oridinary Hard rock to progressive metal up to thrash metal

And I don't ride a bike by the way...I prefer four wheels under my ass.

Just a little David Lee Roth humor, lexman.  No offense intended.  You have to admit, he is a bit of a clown.

Oh, and I'm a big David-Lee-Roth-only Van Halen fan, by the way, so I'm not a Dave hater.

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Stranglers - The Raven
Lake Trout - Another One Lost
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
ZZ Top - Deguello

I suddenly feel like I've betrayed any number of old friends by omission.  Goes without saying this is only the tip of the "iceberg" and even as I click post the list will have changed.  This could become a daily re-post.

There's only really two no-brainers on the list - the top 2 (although even saying that the Stranglers could've been Black & White easily, or Rattus)

Quote from: Ted on July 22, 2009, 01:52:58 PMMore than a year ago, I decided to dump all of my song ratings into a database and find out what my favorite albums were based on the ratings.

Based on ratings of individual songs my analysis showed these as my top five albums:

(1) "Raw Power" by Iggy and the Stooges
(2) "Brutal Youth" by Elvis Costello
(3) "Oyster" by Heather Nova
(4) "So" by Peter Gabriel
(5) "Scatterlings" by Juluka

Funnily enough, in early 2009 I did a similar exercise using the iTunes dump.  What I did was assess each album against the following (subjective) criteria;

PERSONALITY
1 = Didn't really get into it
2 = Briefly amused me
3 = Liked it / still like it
4 = Meant a lot to me
5 = Shaped my life
COOLNESS, IMO
1 = Not Cool at all
2 = Hasn't faired too well
3 = Holds it's own
4 = Still pretty cool really
5 = Right up to date or informs modern music
QUALITY
1 = What was I thinking!?
2 = Not great, some decent stuff
3 = Pretty Good, flashes of brilliance
4 = Cracking Album
5 = Classic, to my mind
CD AGE
1 = Early 90's
2 = Mid-late 90's
3 = Early 00's
4 = Two-three years old
5 = Within a year

I then applied a weighting to each in line with their importance.

Looking at it now, does skew the results in favour of more recent albums.  Anyway, point is the top 5 that came out of that exercise were;

Kings Of Leon   Only by the Night
Kings Of Leon   Because Of The Times
Air   Moon Safari
Japan   Tin Drum
Lake Trout   Another One Lost

Just goes to show.  I still really like KoL, but I'd hardly say they're right up there anymore.

And, yes, before you say it, I am that sad and obsessed with music. :P

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead :o

............and then there is Frank Black.......................top ten rethink.

This is a difficult issue, but I try...

Clash - Clash
Jam - Setting Sons
Frank Bennett - Cash Landing
Ramones - Ramones
Jonathan Richman - Back In Your Life

Explanations:

Clash: A friend of mine bought their debut album. I had heard the single version of White Riot on the radio and I thought wtf is this!! Then, we listened the clash debut time after time and finally I purchased the album...so many memories...I can't mention any weak song in this album...

Jam: I don't remember what was my first touch of this band. A friend of mine (not the "clash friend") recorded "In the City" on cassette to me and I liked it! Later on when Setting Sons was released, I was hooked on it immideately. Saturdays Kids is one of the cachiest brit pop songs ever...imo.

Frank Bennett: He turned pop songs to the "crooner mode" much earlier than Richard Cheese (I like RC, too). What a pity that he recorded only two albums (in the 90's). Fab covers of Smashing Pumpkins, Madonna etc...
I'm sure that without this, Paul Anka wouldn't have done his "crooner style" covers of Nirvana or Soundgarden...

Ramones: I read a Finnish music magazine where the band was praised. So, I took my bike and biked to the town (30 kms) and purchased the album. The cover was cool!!! I wondered how they make so excellent tunes out of three chords!

Jonathan Richman: Egyptian Reggae was the first one I heard from Jonathan, but this very "warm" and nice album touched me! Beautiful and simple.

After all, it was difficult to choose the best ones. A bit punk/new wave albums, but if this would be the best 20 albums, so it'll would be much more versatile!

And I put here only "foreigner" albums. I didn't mentioned any Finn albums, because the most of you don't know about them :) .

Kari

ps. Lately, I haven't been on commenting mode, just lurking behind, but I'll be back...

3) Pink Floyd - Welcome to the machine
4) Satriani - Surfing with an alien

Okay - been thinking about this today - choosen albums that mean something to me, rather than the ones which are technically the best, or greatest playing, or great song writting - so my selection is

1. Asia - Asia, brings me back to the early 80's, still love listening to this - always puts a smile on my face
2. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. Started senior school (year 7 now, aged 11). English teacher said bring a record that you like for discussion - I brought this!
3. Magnum - On a Story Teller Night. I loved this band with a passion, from the early days. Saw them many time in the Marquee in London. The almost broke up with record company issues/legal crap - and then they produced this album, they never quite reach this dizzy height again.
4. Diamond Head - Canterbury. An amazing place, and amazing album. Always sounds like its going to collaspe in a heap - but what songwriting! Great in concert as well.
5. Rush - Hemispheres, I met my wife through discussing this album in a record shop. I still remember buying this and rushing home to put the LP on, I was not disappointed.

A couple more to consider
6. Focus - Moving Waves. Loved this album - some brilliant guitar playing from the crazy dutch :-)
7. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath. Songs my mum knows by heart - brilliant first album.

Not easy to whittle these down!

B.

1. Keith Jarrett -Koln Concert. Can't gettired.
2. Local José Cid "Onde, como quando porquê cantamos canções de pessoas vivas". Warning 30mn long prog rock

3. Stone Roses - Stone Roses. Because it's a great album!
4. Suzanne Vega - Suzanne Vega. I still love all her songs!
5. errrr... pressure.... the fable of the reconstruction of the lamb that lies down on the meddle of the dark side of the moon with  Jackie Brown and suicidal's virgins OSTs... errrr.... too much pressure.... auto destruct NOW

in no particular order :

the stone roses- the stone roses
the zombies - odessey and oracle
iron maiden - the number of the beast
michael jackson - thriller
pixies - doolittle

It would be easier to make a top 15 for me. I ignored beatles albums. I could make a top 5 only with them.

4. Are you Experienced - Jimi
5. Reign  in Blood - Slayer   (Not to be played while driving a car)

He was itching to get this information out to you.  Too bad he isn't registered as he would have been able to do this himself.

   Well now, this is odd...

         Aaron Freeman (Ween) is to release an album of Rod McKuen covers. What a strange day I'm having...

This topic is crazy, because there aren't just five.  Darn you to heck for starting it!

I won't do it!  I can't ... resist.

Stardust – Artie Shaw
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony – The Philadelphia Orchestra w/ Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Eugene Ormandy con.
Will the Circle Be Unbroken – The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy – Return to Forever
Couldn't Stand the Weather – Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble

There are sooo many others.  I know I've insulted so many parts of my vast collection.

IT BURNS US, PRECIOUS!
