Title: American idle ( with DJC)
Post by: DarrenG / The Devil's Toupee on March 16, 2025, 05:34:30 AM
This was a song David Joel Carter wrote a few years ago, drums from Randy perryman. I added some additional music to it and mixed it for him. It ended up going into a kind of gospel choir type sound toward the end which I liked.
Im not sure what the song is about but it has something to do with God and God's wrath I believe ? Only David could have told you.

American Idle
It's a flat earth people and I want you to know
Nothing at all but what I want you to know
You can talk amongst yourselves
But you better be talking about Me

More than superhuman there's a god in My blood
When I take a piss it's likely to flood
And if I'm pissed at you boy
Suddenly you're pre-history

chorus
Turn your eyes to heaven
Shout Holy Shit!
What's coming down?
Did you think this was the first time
I'd seen
The likes of you around?

You want a place in heaven? What's in it for Me?
While I roll the dice I don't do charity
Take your chances at the altar
When bringing Me a sacrifice

You think I want your meat? You think I want your smoke?
You think I want those sons, and daughters that you've choked?
It's a piece of you I'm craving
And I'll slice you into paradise

chorus
Turn your eyes to heaven
Shout Holy Shit!
What's coming down?
Did you think this was the first time
I'd seen
The likes of you around?

Cockroaches. Every time we get new neighbors, cockroaches, dammit. Ah well, I know how to deal with them.

It's the first time I heard this David Joel Carter song (RIP David). It's kind of bouncy like Dire Straits Walk of Life. David had a unique voice and style of song and lyric writing. A good mix and the organ is a good addition. Excellent work Darren!

That's what I like about songcrafters, it introduces you to other artists and its great so hear your interpretation of it.
Great performance.
Almost a gospel feel with those claps.
Excellent.

Cool production, Darren and that organ is cooking. I like how you have created that gospel feel, especially at the outro.

An interesting character was David and I did a few collaborations with him a few years ago but sadly he went downhill after his wife died.

What a flashback hearing DJC again. That man is much missed. Great clab right here. Love the hammond sound and of course Dave had that almost Lou Reed delivery of vox.

A fun romp musically—reminiscent of the B-52s or Jonathan Richman. But lyrically, it's disturbingly ambiguous. While it seems to mock authoritarianism and supremacist rhetoric, the final line about cockroaches blur that intent. Is it critique or endorsement? That uncertainty makes it unsettling in a way that undercuts the playful energy of the music.

Yeah. Let's be charitable and assume that David inclined to satire.
